BR: newborn pro pics

I know many of you have had a newborn pro photo session.....do you mind me asking how much it cost?  I've been looking on local photographer's websites, but of course most of them don't publish prices until you call.  Some show the sitting fess, but I know that the prints and/or CD are what costs the money, not the sitting fee usually.  I just want to get a ballbark figure of what I'm looking at.

MH thinks pro pics will be a waste for a newborn....he thinks he can take photos just fine (he's right, he takes great photos, but I'm not sure he can do this kind I like in this situation)  I'm trying to convince him they are do-able.

Re: BR: newborn pro pics

  • I'm actually doing a maternity shoot and newborn to 1 package for $250. that only includes a storyboard with an image from each session.  I am gong to get the cd with images for $185.  I hope that helps you.
  • Everything I found was an arm & a leg!  The sitting fees were $100 - $200, but you had to buy all of the prints from them (no digital images) and the very few photogs I found that did give you the images charged at least $1,000 for them.  In my opinion, completely unaffordable.

But with the advice from some of the girls on this board, I checked out craigslist & my local bump & nest boards.  Luckily, there was an amateur photog on there who was just trying to build her portfolio & is going to do maternity & newborn pics for me for free!  I was able to see her blog so I know she takes great pictures.  The photogs around here would have just been so much more & I wouldn't have owned any of the images so it just didn't make sense to me.

This is what I'm suspecting.  But it seems like everyone these days gets pro pics done, and I know that they don't all pay this much.  I've got to find a way to make it happen!

Good idea about Craig's List and such....I'll check it out!

Worse case scenario....we had our engagement photos done at Flash Digital Photography (in the mall).  They actually did a fantastic job.  It still was about $450 in total (for sitting fees, a medium-sized package of prints and the CD), but that's at least better than more than a grand!

I don't think this is a bad plan B...especially b/c the babies grow so fast.  All of my friends that paid the arm & leg for newborn pics, most of them only have maybe one (if that) of the newborn pics still up.  They all wanted more current pics on display.  Of course, you want the newborn pics for keepsakes...but a couple grand is a really pricey keepsake!

  • Mine were $150 or so, with a discount because we had done our maternity photos with her.  But she raised her prices to $325/session after we booked her.  Ours also included 15 images on disk and you could purchase additional images for $10 each.  I guess we got quite a deal considering the quality of the photos, which I thought were fabulous.

I hope you find someone reasonable!  We lucked out that our photographer had just started her business last year but is extremely talented.

  • I've contacted a few places and most of them are quoting $1000+ for 3 sessions. Plus a dvd with edited images and some prints as well. Like you, I'm not sure I want to spend that much on NB pictures...maybe I'll have my friend that just took our maternity pictures take NB too? I'm not sure if he'll be confortable with that :)

  • Keep looking!  You should be able to find an "up and coming" photographer that has a keen eye.  For mine, I charge $350 which includes at least 2 hours and a minimum of 100 edited high-res images on DVD.   Try searching on Flickr, as there is a large community of photographers.  Maybe search on the Children Photography or Newborn Photography and see if you can find someone in your area.

HTH.  And this might be stretching it, but Monique Green (Mudpies and Pigtails Newborn Props) has a HUUGE photographer following.  I bought my cute hats/accessories from her.  She's on facebook and might be able to help you find someone!

Good luck, and don't give up.  Newborn photos are so precious!

I hope you find someone but if you can't I would't rule out just going to a mall place.  We went to sears and everything turned out ok.  We got lots of prints for the grandparents and also every image on CD for $150 total .  B/c of the CD I was able to quickly make birth announcements:image

I'm sure I could have found a local "up and coming" photog b/c there is a nice liberal arts college in town but I never did see anything come up on craigslist and then just got lazy but don't regret it  :)

I asked people with kids and they all recommended sears over JCP in our area.

  • Our "baby bundle" was $100 plus prints/CD ($195 for 10 pics or $250 for 40 pics on a disc...print packages start at $89)...out mat shoot was free w/ 10% discount off the CD ($175).  Newborn shoot was an additional $100 plus prints/disc...but we won a $150 credit since he was the first newborn photographed in 2010.

I found her via an ad on FB and she'd just opened her own studio and has been trying to build her clientele...check Craigslist or even the photog board on the bump...you might find someone who's talented and not pricey!

  • our package was $1300, split into payments, and included 5 sessions:
    maternity session
    newborn session
    3 month session
    6 month session
    1 year session

    plus

    50 custom birth announcements
    six 5x7 prints
    10x20 storyboard
    1 flush mount album

the album alone if purchased separately would have been $1k, so even though we have to purchase prints, I think it was a good deal.  i just googled "dallas newborn photographer" and looked at a bunch of portfolios and emailed a bunch of photographers for pricing and then chose the one i liked the best that fit into our budget.  Ideally we would have liked to have found a photographer that gives you all the images on a DVD but there aren't many and I had trouble finding one whose style of photography I liked.

something I didn't think to look into/ask about beforehand that I would recommend.... ask them what happens if your baby is crying the whole time Stick out tongue will they let you reschedule and try again? or will they only give you a certain amount of time per session and that's it? our photog. spent over 4 hrs with miss A for her newborn shoot and still had to come back a 2nd time for another 1.5 hrs or so to get all the images we needed...and for our 6 month shoot she spent 1.5 hrs with us on Sunday and then another 2 hrs w/us again today.... not all that time was active shooting, some of it was me nursing her, trying to calm her down, etc. but if you end up with a not so cooperative baby like me, you'll want a photographer who is flexible and willing to put in the extra time w/you to get some good images... I always apologize to her when it happens and she is super nice and acts like it's no big deal, like it happens with all babies but I know she is just trying to make me feel better....but i'm glad i haven't had to pay her extra for these sessions, even though she lives an hour away from us! so keep that in mind when booking a photographer!

i am not sure what kind of photographer your DH is, but i think newborn pics are esp hard to get unless you do them a lot and have an eye for them. if you want to see the kind of pics he can get, why don't you put a listing on craigslist offering to do a newborn session for free for someone...then you can see if you like the pics your DH takes :)
