Who did you call? Parents, siblings, good friends?
DH found out on Monday that his brother got engaged on Friday! His sister called him because it was his birthday and mentioned it casually since she figured we already knew. When his brother called Monday to wish DH a happy birthday he did tell him about the engagement but said that it was no big deal! Seriously? Does this seem strange to anyone else? Is this a guy thing?
Re: When you got engaged...
Well I called my parents and my best friends. I can't remember how my brother found out. My sister still lives at home (11 yrs younger) so she found out when my Mom yelled to my Dad about it even though Jordan had asked there permission about 2 days before, haha.
Jordan called his parents, but I don't think he called his brothers and sister. I think word just kind of got out when he told his parents and then probably his nephews when he talked to them next. He defiinitely didn't get on the phone like I did (which was like 10 mins after he proposed) to call all his friends.
I do think it's kind of a guy thing. I know at least for my DH he doesn't really talk on the phone to his friends (or siblings) all that often so he doesn't have that initial reaction to call them when things like engagements go down.
Actually my closest brother was the first to know.
He just happened to call to wish me a happy birthday (H proposed on my birthday) at the right moment and so he found out first.
I followed it up with sending a photo message of my engagement ring on my hand to my BFF's and one of my sisters.
(My family's not real close. I think the rest of my family found out through the trickle-down method or by getting a wedding related email.)
Our situation is a little different because we got engaged at a dinner party we were throwing. First we called our parents. Then our siblings. My sister was hard to get a hold of then his siblings, but her and her friends ended up coming over and we drank champagne for the rest of the night. I think the final count was 10 bottles. Good times!
That night, I called my parents and my sister but not my brother. I think I called my brother the next day or so. DH called his parents (his sister happened to be there already or else he probably would have called her as well).
I think this is a guy thing mostly. I wouldn't think anything of it really.
we drove over to my parents' house (they already knew bc he went over and asked my dad's permission) and his parents' house (they already knew he was going to do it) that day to tell him/show off the ring. i stopped by my 2 bff's houses that day too. i ended up setting up a brunch the day after with my siblings to tell them.
i actually told my SIL that her sister was engaged bc i saw it on facebook. when she called her like ugh something you want to tell me? and she was like yeah i figured you guys would assume we got engaged. ugh okay. she was really hurt.
my BIL waited to tell us in person a week later (they live out of state). it was cool to be told in person but yeah i think it is weird to not tell your brother asap!
Well, we did things kind of odd b/c we wanted to tell our parents first, and my mom was out of town when we got engaged. We got engaged on a Saturday (we were on a weekend trip); mom didn't get back till Wednesday. Basically, mom was in charge of spreading the news for our family. I think she called everyone that night! We went to see DH's dad the next day. SIL knew already b/c she went with DH to pick out my ring.
So, my coworkers all knew before my family & friends b/c I wore my ring to the office Monday. But they don't know my family so they weren't going to spill the beans before mom got back.
