Update on the office situation...

Well, Buildings and Grounds is defintely on my side! They came today to start strategizing how to clear out the crap, and I showed them some other random stuff that I had been hiding in various spots around my office.  Like - RANDOM stuff from when this office was used by a visiting professor three years ago.  Stuff that she LEFT BEHIND when she left, ie: a hot plate, a mortar and pestle, a tape deck that has to be from the 1960's, a basketball, and a huge planter and some random vases.

The guy  from B&G picked up the planter and walked out with it to throw it away, and the admin assistant (I'll call her AA from now on) saw it and said "Oh no no no no!  Where are you going with that!?  You can through that out!!  It belongs to [old visiting professor]!"

Ok, now correct me if I am wrong, but once you leave a job, do you expect to keep your stuff in your old office??  And do you expect to have it waiting for you forever, should you choose to go back and get it at some point??  Um, NO!  If this woman left it, it's because she didn't want it!  And I have been here for a year and she has not come back to get it yet - so I'm guessing that she forgot it is even here!

Why is it ok to leave her crap in my office when she doesn't even care enough about it to come back and get it?  And WHY can't this stuff go into the basement if we can't throw it out?? AA got all possesive and was like "Put it right here, it has to stay up here".  Why?  If this woman ever comes back (which I assure you, she won't - this stuff is really garbage) she can go into the basement to get her things.  In a school where office space is at such a premium, it seems ridiculous that a working office should become a shrine to someone who doesn't work here anymore!

Anyway, I think they will be clearing out things today, which should be interesting because AA is getting more and more angry as this continues.  But the B&G guys keep making jokes about it to me, so I know at least they understand the ridiculousness of the matter!

I will keep you all updated as things progress :-)

Wow, I wonder what AA's obsession is with the previous professor.

  • I think AA may need a Hoarders intervention.

  • Hoarders was the first thing I thought of too!  Wow, what a nutjob.  I'm glad you have B&G on your side now!

And um...a mortar and pestle?  In an office?  That's kind of special. :)

  • AA sounds like an annoying AH that has nothing else better to do with her time than obsess over 50 year old crap...what a PITA!

This.  I am glad that B&G are sympathetic to your cause.  It's disrespectful to think that you should be the one to put up with someone else's junk in your space.  Your colleague sounds like a jerkface.

  • I have taken over two classrooms from slobs. The best trick is black garbage bags. Then people don't know what you're throwing away. Otherwise, people are like that's so nice you don't want that or tell you that you can't throw something away. Leaving stuff is rude enough, but complaining that you're getting rid of it is over the top.

  • Oh, she is getting ridiculous, that coworker of yours. I'm glad that B&G are on your side and helping you deal with all that clutter. I hope you don't work closely with AA, so that once this whole thing is over, you don't have to deal with her too much!
  • No, I don't work with her at all actually.  She's not my AA, she is just in the same office suite as me.  Thankfully I have no issues with my aa at all, I love her!

  • I would tell the Buildings guys to move all the stuff into AA's office/cubicle, since she seems so protective of it...  then let her deal with it.
