Hotwire or Priceline?

I need to book a hotel, which one do you have better luck with?  Thx.

Re: Hotwire or Priceline?

  • I've never tried Hotwire, but I have had good luck with Priceline.
  • I don't know why, but I'm so nervous to try naming my price, just b/c I'm afraid I might get something I don't want.  But I also want a good deal.  Haha.

This is me, too. One of these days, I'm sure my cheap nature will get the better of me. Until then, however, I use - and have been happy with - Hotwire.

Check betterbidding.com.  I think it tells you what hotels people are commonly getting with Priceline.

I also combat my fears of the unknown by never choosing less than 4 star.  While I might not get the exact hotel I want, any 4 star is usually just fine.

  • I do most of my booking on Priceline.  If I can't get what I want on that, then I try Hotwire.
  • Always hotwire.  I check betterbidding.com too.

I've tried to use priceline but couldn't find as good of a deal and didn't find the site to be very user-friendly.

  • I've had awesome luck with Hotwire. Last time we used it we stayed at the Swissotel downtown Chicago for $75. I've never used Priceline though, I'm also intimidated by the name your own price...
  • Ooh I love the Swiss.

We just stayed at the Hyatt Regency for $70 through Priceline.

  • Betterbidding.com helps alleviate a lot of my fears because they do list the hotels that you're bidding on.

I would never name my own price for a hotel that I needed for more than a few nights, or for anything where I wanted a very specific location or amenities, but I think it works well if you have some flexibility as far as location and if its just for a night or two.

This is us exactly.  I usually have a good idea of what I'm booking using the Better Bidding lists.  We almost always use Hotwire, and Priceline is our back-up.  Using the Better Bidding lists, I can usually narrow the Hotwire hotels down to 1-2.  Today, I booked a 4.5* in Chicago-- thinking it was probably the James.  It was (woo hoo!).

Plus, I TripAdvisor the hotels on the Better Bidding list.  There was a $95 4*, but it looked like it was a hotel w/ a 70% approval rating on TripAdvisor, and ranked 80ish/180.  The $136 4.5* had WAY better ratings, and was therefore worth the extra $$$, IMO.

  • I tried Hotwire first, and came up with $135.00 for a 4* in the area I wanted.  So then I went to Priceline, put a bid in for $79 which was rejected, then tried $99 (using the same criteria under MH's name) and got a room at a Westin.  I checked travelocity, expedia and another site, and saw it listed for $219 and $220, so I feel happy with the way things turned out.  The hotel rates #21 out of 117 on trip advisor, so I didn't think that was too shabby.  Thx!
