green or gross?

what are your thoughts on buying a used mattress?

a friend is selling their king size bed, and would give us a great deal. i really really want a king, as we bedshare with DS, but this is the only way we'd be able to afford one.

i'm not super close with her, but trust that they aren't "dirty people" (whatever that means Stick out tongue). it's four years old, one apple juice stain, no chemicals have been used to clean it, and they have been using a mattress cover most of the four years.

i wouldn't feel comfortable buying a used mattress from a stranger (from craigslist for example), but i'm thinking i'd be okay with this.

Re: green or gross?

  • I think it's both.  If it doesn't bother you, go for it!
  • I wouldn't buy a used mattress because 1. it's gross and 2. there is the potential for bedbugs.
  • I've bought a used mattress from a friend, so it wouldn't bother me.

Heck, I bought a used mattress from a fellow student (via either Craigslist or the University classifieds...I can't remember) in college and it doesn't gross me out!  No stains, no bugs, no smells, and I'm still alive 6 years later!

I say as long as you are comfortable with it, go for it!

  • Our mattress was a used one acquired from a friend of my mom's and we've sold our past mattresses as we've upgraded. If there's no damage or stains and it's still in good shape I wouldn't see any reason to send it to the dump. You can get a zippered mattress cover if you're concerned.

  • If you know they are clean people...and there is no chance they have bed bugs- go for it.  If you really wanted to...could you use something to steam clean it?
  • From a friend, yes. You'd probably also spend a night or two in their home (if you were coming from say out of town) which would also expose you to bed bugs if they had them. Plus they've usually had a mattress cover.

    From a stranger, no way!!

  • I don't know about buying one from a stranger... (eww!) but from a friend, it doesn't seem like a big deal. Plus you can use a mattress cover. I have to admit, all regular mattresses creep me out a bit. Embarrassed I have a waterbed - nothing can live inside it, or at least if it does, it cant come out and get me!!

  • thanks, ladies. I think we'll go ahead and buy it, I don't see us affording a king any other way.

and i didn't really think of this earlier, but a friend's dad owns a carpet cleaning business and they do couches and mattresses as well - i think we'll get it cleaned right after we get it.

  • If you're comfortable with it, I say go for it.  It's really a personal preference?  Would I do it?  No, but I'm weird like that Stick out tongue

  • I think that if you get it steam cleaned/deoderized, it should be ok.
  • Um. Have you ever stayed in a hotel before? A lot more strangers have stayed in those beds than the people you know in this bed you are taking.
  • Yes, I definitely would buy it from a friend. I wouldn't think twice, actually!
