Re: This is just ridiculous
Ok, this is take two....try #1 was a little harsh.
Basically, I think this is okay...not great, but certainly not "ridiculous." It's common knowledge nowadays that tanning = increased risk of skin cancer. How does that make your life better? So you like to smoke? Maybe we should reduce/eliminate the tax on cigarettes simply b/c you like the way you look "cool" when you smoke. Seriously, you insist on tanning - throw on a swim suit and go lie outside. Now you just avoided the tax AND the initial cost.
I'm sorry. It just blows my mind that people are freaking out over the attempt to discourage something so dangerous for you.

Discouraging people from causing their own cancer will help us all out in the long run. Sick people who can't afford their medical treatments flows down to us all.
And don't get me started on immigration. I have a feeling we're on the opposite sides of the fence on that one.

LOL lets just go ahead and agree to disagree on that one!
My biggest problem with the govt having "sin" taxes on cigarettes, tanning, soda, etc. is that I think it's a slippery slope when it comes to deciding what is deemed bad or unhealthy or dangerous enough to tax. What about potato chips, convenience foods, spam, ramen noodles, pizza, fried food, candy...? Where do we draw the line on what we discourage and what we don't, and why is that the government's place to begin with... to say what we should or should not eat, drink, do? What about risky hobbies? Do we tax those?
You couldn't have said it better. That's how I feel exactly.
THIS makes sense. "Awwww, but I like to tan" does not.
