IUDs

I really want an IUD but I would have to get it inserted in outpatient surgery. I think I would consider Mirena or a non-hormonal based IUD but I do not want systemic hormones. For those that have used IUDs did you like it? Do you think it would be worth it? Any problems?

Re: IUDs

  • Mirena IS the hormonal one - Paragard is the non-hormonal one.  www.paragard.com

I have one, and I love it.  Paragard is notorious for making your periods heavier and crampier, but that's been a small price to pay for birth control that doesn't influence my sex drive and that I never have to think about.  I've had it for 5 years now.

I have a mirena, and its been in for a little over a year. I have no complaints! Also I havent had a period since it was placed!!!

Is your OB placing it? Mine was just inserted during a regular office visit, and took no longer than 5 min.

  • I have the Paragard and wouldn't trade it for the world.

Yes, my periods are heavier (day 1 so light no tampon needed, days 2 and 3 better change that sucker every 4hrs, day 4 normal and day 5 so light no tampon needed) and I have bad cramps usually on the first day but sometimes half the day on the 2nd day too. Other than that I love it!

BTW, I do not have kids and insertion was a breeze. You will hear horror stories of insertion being bad especially for those who have never had kids. I don't know, maybe I'm just very tolerant to pain but my insertion wasn't bad. Hurt for about 30 sec. and that was it.

This was true for me too.

Also, I don't think Mirena has "systemic" hormones.  It is very low-dose and since they are localized to the uterus, causes very few negative side effects - much less than pills or other hormonal methods.  Unless your doc said you can't have it, I'd consider it if I were you.  Ask her about the benefits of getting rid of your periods too - very interesting stuff.  I'll likely get Mirena when my Paragard is up.

  • I actually had tried to have Mirena inserted twice. Both attempts failed which is why it would have to be done in at OR next time rather than in an office setting.

I thought Mirena mostly acted locally on the uterus, with low levels of hormones systemically which is why I preferred it to traditional hormonal birth control pills.

  • i had a copper iud (make sure you're not allergic to copper) for a year.  my cycles were worse and more painful but it's not like that for a lot of women. but since the pill kind of killed my sex drive it was one of my only options before my DH and i were TTC.

good luck with whatever you decide.

  • I got mirena  about 3 months ago and so far I love it! The insertion was very painful (I haven't had and children) but so worth it to not have to worry about bc for 5 years!

Several people scared me with stories about cramping and bleeding for a long time after, but it really just depends on the person. I cramped off and on for about a week and had some heavy spotting for he first few weeks but now I am fine! Little to no period! If you do decide to get it I suggest taking a couple of pain pills an hour or so before. It is also a good idea to take someone with you. I was very lightheaded when I left so I was glad I had my mom to drive me home!

  • I had a Mirena IUD for a little over 3 years. For the first 2 years it was fine, I didn't have any real problems. But in the 3rd year OMG it was HORRIBLE! I was constantly in pain, bleeding for weeks at a time, cramps, I would get stabbing pains in my ovaries that would stop me in my tracts, once a month I would get all the symptoms of being pregnant for the last 3 months I had it. I also got PID after 2 years of having it (pelvic inflamitory disease) because the cord makes it easier for bacteria and things to get into your uterus. That caused me to have to go to the ER, miss 2 days of work and now I might be sterile. My husband also had complaints while we were intimate because the string (which feels like fishing wire) would poke him. I finally went to the Dr office and got it removed (which didn't feel good and the pain lasted a few days) and now I'm back on The Pill and I couldn't be happier!!!!  All the symptoms I had are gone.

On a post script, I'm a VERY sensitive person, I always have been. So what bothers me doesn't seem to bother a lot of other people.

  • I had the merina for a year and a half. I have never had kids and the insertion made me almost pass out I think it was the most painful thing I have done. I had constant pain. I thought my uterus was falling out. When I complained about the pain they had me do an ultr sound for placement and said it was fine and that was all they could offer. When I went in again about it they suggested putting me on a second form of BC to take the cramping away. I eventually had it taken aout and the doctor who took it out said that she was concerned that the pain was a sign the IUD might make me steryl. I loved not having to think about it. ( i have messed up the ring twice now but luckily avoided pregnancy) but the pain was awful. I do have two friends one who had a child and the other not and they both love it an haven't expierenced any of the issues i have besides the pain of insertion.
  • I have mirena and I love it. Cramping after insertion was not fun, but my DH actually proposed to me the day I got it so that may have blurred my memories of any severe pain. Stick out tongue

I love that my periods are super light and last maybe 2 days. The only downside is that I no longer have a regular cycle so my periods come whenever they feel like it. If I was better at keeping track there might be some method to the maddness, but I would guess about every 8-12 weeks I get a period.

  • I just got my Mirena (it will be 3 weeks ago on Friday) and I love it so far!  I have no had children, so insertion was a bit uncomfortable, but only for 3-7 seconds or so!  I was crampy that night, but took motrin and used a heating pad.  I didn't spot until this week (not enough to use anything), which sucks, but its normal.  DH and I have had no problems in the bedroom - we did it a week after insertion with no issues whatsoever.

I have had two moments of weird crampiness during last week - but it lasted less than one minute and nothing since.

For us, it was a great decision that I am glad we made!

  • The insertion part for me will be different.  They said I would need some type of anesthesia because I have issues (cervical stricture) which would make it too painful otherwise. I had the insertion attempted twice (the first time they tried for 45 minutes!). I'm more worried about the experience after it's inserted. I would hate to have to go through a surgical procedure to get it and then have it taken out right after, ya know! I feel like it would be worth it though and it seems like most people have had good experiences. I think I'm going to see if my insurance will pay for it again.

  • I have a mirena and LOVE it! I haven't had a period since the day it was put in (about a year and half ago). I have no kids so like the other said the insertion was painful but if you get up and go afterwards it keeps your mind off of it. I think it was worth every penny!
  • I would seriously hug my Mirena if I could. I looooove it! Because I've never had children, insertion was quite painful (despite the ibuprofen I took beforehand and the novocaine they used on my cervix). I had pretty bad cramping for the next couple days and on and off for the next few months. My cycle was really screwed up for a while--with random bleeding happening about every other week. At about the six month mark, my period completely went away and it's been gone ever since. I love not having to worry about birth control anymore.

are the cramps what you would assume contractions (since you haven't had kids) would be like? cause that's how my cramps have been since i got mine.. SO WEIRD. They come out of "nowhere" and in weird waves that last for a minute or so, hurt like hell, and then go away.

Be careful. I know my doc refused to put on in a woman who had a uterus that wasn't shaped "normal." I think you might have a higher risk of complications because of this.  I am totally on the IUD bandwagon, but if you need surgery to get it in, my guess is that you'll need surgery to get it out. If your uterus is shaped differently, embrace it and find a contraceptive that will really benefit you the most.

  • I got the mirena about 3 months ago and i love it! Like most people, the first few weeks i spotted and had some cramps, but nothing worse than a period. After about 4 weeks the spotting stopped and i haven't had a period since, just occasional spotting.

The insertion was a breeze for me, i was so scared after my friend told me it hurt worse than anything she's ever felt, but for me i didn't even know the dr had put it in. It was less painful than a papsmear if you ask me.

     I hope this is helpful!
