WWYD? (nursery d&r edition)

I think we're 99% done with Alex's nursery (btw, if I didn't mention before, we're going with the name Alexander Gabriel)...just waiting on our other valance to arrive and other minor decorative things. Here's the dilemma. We have 2 windows in the room and both have beige-colored blinds. It wouldn't be a question of whether or not to keep them if they were intact, but a couple of the slats are broken on both blinds. I was wanting to get some new darker bamboo blinds (to keep the light out) but the window sizes aren't standard so we'd have to shell out at least $200 to get them custom-made.

So would you get the new blinds anyway, keep the old broken blinds, or do something else? Any other suggestions for re-arranging things to make better use of the space? I initially wanted to put the changing table/dresser where the tree is, but DH didn't want to cover it up.

Here are some pics of the nursery as is. It's so small that there's not much space to hold everything, so suggestions for moving things around are also appreciated. Thanks!

  • LOVE the nursery and the name!! Not sure about the blinds. I think I might get a cheaper replacement for the broken ones because I'd hesitate to spend that much for custom ones with a baby on the way.

  • Nursery is adorbs!! I feel your pain on the irregular window. ::sigh::

I agree with KB on getting a cheaper replacement. Can you find 2" faux wood blinds? Or a room-darkening roman shade?

Thanks! Yeah, our old 1924 house is full of irregular windows. I love roman shades, but alas, I'd have the same problem with expense. We bought two for our kitchen windows (also irregular size) and it cost $250! I'm not a huge fan of faux wood blinds, but I'm thinking you're right and this might be the best solution because at least these can be cut to size and they would keep the room darker. I guess I need to make another Lowe's/Home Depot trip this weekend.

  • Your nursery is super cute! I would go with faux wood blinds, for now. They might not be exactly what you want, but it will be close, and they will be cheaper.

  • Love the nursery -- you did a great job.  I think you made great use of the space.

For the windows - I would probably get something cheaper for now to keep the room darker - you probably won't want room darkening shades in there forever, so I wouldnt shell out the money on expensive ones.

  • I agree with the cheaper blinds. Are you crafty at all? My sister used these directions to make her own roman shades. HTH

I'm not really crafty but the link you sent made it look easy enough. Maybe I'll try this out first and then pick up some faux wood blinds if that doesn't work. Thanks for the suggestion!

  • I don't really have any tips on the blinds, but wanted to say that I love the room.  Looks great!

  • I love the name and the nursery!

As far as the blinds go, if you decide to go with the expensive ones, check into a cordless option for safety.  I sold custom window shades very briefly in a previous job and this was one of our biggest tips for nurseries because the cord can be a strangle hazard.  With this in mind, I would go ahead and make the investment rather than have a cheaper option to replace for safety reasons in the coming months.
