recovering dining chairs - fabric question

I'm inheriting a dining table and chairs from my grandparents, but they are pretty dated.  Here's a picture.

Would it look weird to put a more modern fabric on those chairs(not too contemporary, but I'd like to stray away from really traditional fabrics if I can) , or should I stick to something more traditional since the set is pretty dated-looking?

Re: recovering dining chairs - fabric question

  • I think you could use a more modern fabric.  We did that on our old set and it looks great.  You could always eventually refinish the wood and give it a completely different look to make it more modern!
  • I think you could totally do a more modern fabric.  What exactly are you thinking?  Color, pattern, etc.

  • I think the chairs would look great with new fabric on them.
  • I think that would look great, really eclectic & modern.  Is the set from the 40s?  It's a revival of early 1800s design, so just think of the new fabric as yet another reinvention of a classic.

  • I don't know the style of your house but as soon as I saw the picture I had this image in my head of the chairs having a grey/silver fabric. Don't ask why, I don't have an answer as to why!

  • Thanks for the replies!  I don't have a specific fabric in mind yet, I'm getting the set on Saturday, and I just started kind of looking around.  My house right now is really plain and I hate it,  I'd like to get some color in it so I was thinking something somewhat bold if I can sell DH on it (he'd have the whole house in white if he could, I had to fight to paint our family room a light almond color, lol).
