Re: ?Mamas & Mamas to Be: Weekly Check-in?

  • (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? 10.5 weeks

    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? BFF was in town from the bay area to meet Jack.  I go back to work on 5.17.

Jack updates - He is amazed at his hands, he could stare at them all day.  I'm not sure he quite realizes they are connected to him.  Sometimes when he takes them out of his mouth he gets so sad and doesn't realize he could easily just stick it back up there.  He is starting to kick himself from tummy to side and then gets stuck and gets MAD.

    (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?

    (4) What is one BR thing that you learned this week? 12 weeks goes so fast :(

    (5) What are you doing to celebrate Mother's Day? Jack is taking me to a Mothers tea party tomorrow :) Brunch with my mom and g'ma on Sunday and a trip to the market to buy lots of plants to get our house and garden summer ready.

    (6) What brand of diapers and wipes do/will you use?  What do you like about them?  What don't you like? diapers: various cloth diaper brands - haven't used or bought disposables since leaving the hospital.

wipes - water and scraps of cloth, sometimes with a spritz of CA Baby Diaper area wash.  7th Generation while out and about.

    (7) What is the vest thing about being PG or being a mommy this week? The way Jack looks at me.  Sometimes he has to stop nursing just to smile at me.  LOVE.

    (8) Where does/will your baby sleep?  he sleeps next to me in the co-sleeper.  Will probably move the crib into our room in a month or so for him to sleep in through the summer.

Mamas: Now that you're a mother do you find yourself doing anything that makes you say,"Wow! I am just like MY mother!"  If so, what is it? not yet, but I hope I'm as great at it as her

BONUS: PIP of your bump or LO or for TTCers, link to your chart!

this hat was in a box of DH's baby stuff MIL gave me.

  • Hey Lori, can you change the spelling of Dash's name? It has a double "l" on the end (Dashiell). Thanks! Also thanks for running the check in...I don't even know what day it is right now lol.

    (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? They're 2 weeks old.

    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? Tired in general, and extremely frustrated and downhearted about breastfeeding. I simply don't know what else to do about bf'ing, at least as far as increasing my supply goes. I nurse the boys at every feed, pump between feeds, and give them "snacks" as required - and still my body just won't seem to catch up. I'm SO frustrated and disheartened about all of this, and I don't know what I'm doing wrong, or what else I can do to help things along. I'm sticking to my one month goal, but this is just so, so hard - and as hard as it is physically, I think it's even harder emotionally to be throwing my heart and soul into this and coming up empty handed. I know it's not the end of the world, and that even if we always have to supplement with formula it's OK, but it's just so disheartening to do everything "right" and still struggle so much.

    (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? I need to make an appointment for our 6 week checkup...

    (4) What is one BR thing that you learned this week? That babies cry for no reason. I know that's not exactly original, but it's true. Sometimes they're fed, dry, warm, comfortable, and still cry and cry. Although I guess I shouldn't say "no reason" - generally when they wail even though everything is fine, they're fighting sleep (seriously, what is so unattractive about sleep?)...so I guess that's the reason. Luckily I wouldn't classify either of them as colic-y, so that's a silver lining!

    (5) What are you doing to celebrate Mother's Day? Going out to lunch with the ILs and my mom. I'm a bit nervous about negotiating a restaurant with a massive double stroller and the boys. Sad

    (6) What brand of diapers and wipes do/will you use?  What do you like about them?  What don't you like? We're currently using Baby Love (disposables), which is an Aussie brand. I'm not crazy about them - the shape of the leg gussets just isn't right for our little men - so we'll try something different next time we buy them (still a little way off from transitioning to cloth).

    (7) What is the vest thing about being PG or being a mommy this week? I SWEAR they smile at me now. I know everyone says it's just gas, but I absolutely swear they're smiles and it melts my heart.

    (8) Where does/will your baby sleep? In their nursery. Now that I'm up so many times a night, I can really see the attraction in having them in your room, but we simply don't have space for this.

Mamas: Now that you're a mother do you find yourself doing anything that makes you say,"Wow! I am just like MY mother!"  If so, what is it? Ha! Bad day to ask this question. She and I actually got into a fight this morning over something she said that REALLY hurt my feelings...so my kneejerk reaction to the question is "HELL NO" but I'm sure I'll end up finding something eventually lol.

  • (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?  28 weeks, 4 days

    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?  Well, I've had laryngitis (a fantastic thing for an elementary music teacher, by the way!) for over a week now.  I'm so frustrated with this!  I can talk softly and low, but I can't sing at all.  At first I though it wasn't pg related at all, but now I think it might be related to acid reflux, which I've read can cause this......boo!  I'm trying to cut out a lot of acidic foods, and take lots of Tums, and we'll see if that helps.

Other than that, we are making excellent progress on our nursery (PIPs in another post)....I'm getting so excited!

    (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?

In 2 weeks.  I've officially switched from once every 4 weeks to every 2.

    (4) What is one BR thing that you learned this week?  Acid reflux in pg can cause laryngitis!

    (5) What are you doing to celebrate Mother's Day?  Nothing planned.  I've hinted maybe brunch to MH, but he seemed to think that he doesn't have to do anything like that until next year (pout).  I'll bet any money he'll bring me flowers, though (he's good like that).

    (6) What brand of diapers and wipes do/will you use?  What do you like about them?  What don't you like? I'm so overwhelmed by this still!  As of now (and this changes every week!)  I'm planning on getting some Nature Babycare disposables, and some FuzziBunz cloth diapers and trying them both out at first.  I haven't even tackled wipes yet!

    (7) What is the best thing about being PG or being a mommy this week? That I'll have houseguests in a few weeks and not only did they tell me that I didn't need to worry about cleaning for them, but that they'll clean for me while they're here!!!!  Of course, I will still probably clean before they come a little, but it's nice to be off the hook for some things!  Wink

    (8) Where does/will your baby sleep?  I'm hoping to get a co-sleeper for him to be right next to me at night, at least at first.  But his crib for naps.

BONUS: PIP of your bump or LO or for TTCers, link to your chart!

MH took some great 28 week photos this past weekend, but hasn't emailed them to me yet....soon!

  • (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?  34w1d

    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?  I am really exhausted and have BH pretty regularly.  I have had something going on with my stomach (running to the bathroom)for almost a week now and it has made me feel bad at times.  He has dropped and the weight makes it hard to do anything now.  I have had 2 showers and my last one is this weekend and got most of it washed and put away and his bed is made and ready.

    (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up? I have my 36 week appt on the 20th.  We finally get to see our little man again it has been so long.  I went yesterday and was not dialated but was 60% effaced and she said he was head down.

    (4) What is one BR thing that you learned this week?

    (5) What are you doing to celebrate Mother's Day?  IDK yet but I'm sure we will end up eating with my mom or something.

    (6) What brand of diapers and wipes do/will you use?  What do you like about them?  What don't you like? Right now we have been given all different brands so we will just whatever we have and maybe by the time we get through all those we will have decided which ones we like best.

    (7) What is the best thing about being PG or being a mommy this week? This week has not been good since I have been feeling pretty blah

    (8) Where does/will your baby sleep?   In his crib which is in our room.

This is one that was taken in costa rica at 32w5d.  I am having a maternity shoot tomorrow so I hope we get some good ones then

  • (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?

Libby is 14w and 3d old (just over 3 months old)

    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?

Have been feeling very emotional...my Dad was here for a 10 day visit and departed on Tuesday.  I only get to see him every 18-24 months or so and miss him terribly.  I am glad he got to meet Libby while she was a baby.  It may be his only visit we her during her babyhood, which makes me sad.

I am also back to work fulltime now and it's hard not to feel like I am missing out on the little things with Libby.  I never thought I'd like to be a SAHM, but it seems like something I would like to do.  It's not possible though since I am the primary income earner right now and it won't be changing for several years.  Luckily, Libby is will daddy and/or grandma while I am at work...so it's basically for selfish reasons that I'd want to be a SAHM.  Hopefully I'll get back into the groove at work and this melancholy will pass.

Libby continues to teeth...she's also showing more interest in her toys and books which is cute and continues to "talk" to us.

    (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?

Nothing until Libby's 4 month appt. in early June.

    (4) What is one BR thing that you learned this week?

Babies can learn to potty as young as 2 months old!  We're going to try part-time Elimination Communication and see how it goes.  For more information, check out:

    http://www.diaperfreebaby.org/

    (5) What are you doing to celebrate Mother's Day?

J has to work so I am not sure.  My mom and I and Libby might have a girl's day out with a picnic in the park or something.  Hmmm...I'll have to see.

    (6) What brand of diapers and wipes do/will you use?  What do you like about them?  What don't you like?

We use cloth 99% of the time...OsoCozy Unbleached Indian Cotton Prefolds with Thirsties Duo Covers.  We don't Snappi anymore since it seems to squeeze Libby's tummy too much.  We're using Thirsties Duo Diapers with an additional hemp insert for overnight diapering and so far, no leaks!

We have one Fuzzi Bunz one size as a back up nighty dipe (if she soils her Thirsties one before morning which is happening less and less nowadays or if we've not gotten our diaper laundry done in advance of her bedtime).  I don't like the FB as well since it has snaps rather than Aplix and it makes the fit harder to get with Libby's small waist and chunky thighs.  I prefer the Aplix.  We've had some leaks with the FB or making it so tight that it leaves red marks on her chubs.

For wipes we use Bamboo Fleece Wipes that I bought from Etsy Seller Wooldins.  We wet them with plain tap water and keep them in a Lionsheart Wipes Warmer.

For travel we use Walgreen's Bamboo Wipes (disposable) in Unscented.  They're great! And sometimes we'll but a 7th Generation sposie on her while we're out...depends upon how long we'll be gone, etc.  If it's just a quick trip to the store or the park, etc. we'll do cloth but if we'll be out for 4+ hours we take along the sposies.  Still looking for my best option for our travels in August and October.

    (7) What is the best thing about being PG or being a mommy this week?

I love nursing Libby, especially now that I am back to work.  It's our special time to connect and I just love nurturing her in this way.  It also helps that my supply seems to have finanly regulated so I am not having issues with overactive letdown and oversupply like I used to in the past. And I am leaking way less, which is nice.

I also just love seeing Libby take in the world...she's so observant and her skills grown by leaps and bounds each day.  Just this week she's really into grabbing the tou ring links I've had on her carseat since she was about 4 weeks old.  Now she grabs and chews on them...it's so darn cute!

    (8) Where does/will your baby sleep?

She naps primarily in her crib these days (although she's been breaking her swaddle and waking herself up in weird positions, like with her feet up on the slats...I am thinking we may need to get a bumper, but I am not sure if we should get the mesh one or what).  Sometimes she'll nap in her swing, but not too often anymore as she seems not to sleep more than 30-45 minutes in it these days.

In the evenings, I nurse her down in our bed.  She sleeps quite well there.  At 7 p.m. I nurse her in the middle of our bed and she'll sleep there until about 9 p.m. (we have a sleep number bed and I set it to maximum firmness.  I remove all blankets, duvets, etc. and push the pillows out to the outside so they are not near her but could block her from rolling off (she's not rolling in her sleep yet and doesn't move when she's on our bed the way she does when she's in her crib).  At 9 p.m. she usually wakes and is up for an hour or so.  We head to be together around 10-10:30 p.m. and I nurse her lying next to me, between me and her co-sleeper.  Then J will move her to the co-sleeper around 11 p.m. (he comes to bed around 1 a.m. or so).  When she stirs between 2-2:30 a.m. I pull her back into bed with me and nurse her.  She sleeps there until 5 a.m. when I nurse her again and get up for work.  She stays in bed, on my side with J until about 8-8:30 a.m.

TTCers:  Which cycle are you on?  Where in the cycle are you?  What, if anything, are you doing to have success TTCing?

Mamas: Now that you're a mother do you find yourself doing anything that makes you say,"Wow! I am just like MY mother!"  If so, what is it?

Nothing yet, except that when we talk about discipline (for the future) and things like meals (bagged lunches vs. cafeteria, etc.) I am very much like my mother.  She was pretty strict with us...no TVs in our room, no pagers (back in the day) until High School, etc. and I can see myself doing the same with technology and my kids.  I am also a huge proponent of packed lunches with wholesome foods and family mealtimes together with home cooked dinners, etc.  Even though for many years my mom was a working single mom these are things she did for us and as an adult I greatly appreciate it.

Ah Lisa, I am sorry.  Have you been able to consult with a Lactation Consultant?  One may be very helpful.  When I was having issues I corresponded with one via email and she was very helpful.  She never came to me (I didn't end up needing her to), but I definitely feel like her advice helped.  If you can get with one, even by phone or email, it may help you.  Hang in there mama...are you just having supply issues right now?  Or is it more than that?  Have you considered taking medication to increase your supply...I think Teri is doing that and she may be able to give you more information.

Boo hoo! Laryngitis sucks, especially when you reply upon your voice for work.  My BFF is a voice teacher and opera singer and PG with #2...she also has bad reflux and takes 150 mg of Zantac daily to cope.  You might ask your doc about this.  I took Zantac daily during my third tri because my reflux was so bad.  Once I delivered Libby it all went away and I've only had to take Tums a handful of times since she's been born (usually if I eat tomato-based things like spaghetti or pizza).  Good luck!  Warm water with lemon and honey always seemed to help soothe my irritated cords as well as gargling with salt water.
  • 1) What week are you in/how old is your LO? 22 weeks!

    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share? feeling pretty good.  felt the baby move which is very reassuring & had the 5 month ultrasound & everything looked great.

    (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?  Next appt is 5/27, but just a check up

    (5) What are you doing to celebrate Mother's Day?  celebrating with dad's side of the family on Saturday and then my mom & in-laws on Sunday

    (6) What brand of diapers and wipes do/will you use?  What do you like about them?  What don't you like?  oh goodness...I haven't even thought of diapers & wipes yet!!

    (7) What is the best thing about being PG or being a mommy this week?  feeling the baby move

    (8) Where does/will your baby sleep?  i plan on having the bassinet/crib in our room at first & then once he/she starts STTN moving them into their own room

  • (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?

    she's almost 6 months! wow!

    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?

i'm happy to report that my visit w/the urologist went well. apparently it's fairly common for women to get these cysts during pregnancy... but he said we don't have to do anything about it unless it starts to interfere w/urination or becomes painful during sex.

miss A finally "remembered" how to roll from her tummy to her back again! it was so weird...it was like after she figured out how to roll from back to belly, she totally forgot how to get back! but it's interesting b/c she doesn't do it the same way now. when she was younger and did it, she'd simply use the weight of her head and kind of lean to the side and topple over to go from belly to back.... now she uses her legs, arches her back up like she is about to crawl and then twists her body over to flip herself. it's cute :) and now that she knows how to do this, she is rolling/flipping more than just once....so i'm not sure i feel comfortable  leaving her on the bed to nap anymore, even w/pillows around her!

    (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?

in a few weeks for her 6 month boosters

    (4) What is one BR thing that you learned this week?

some babies are just camera shy ;) and act totally different in front of the camera vs with you

    (5) What are you doing to celebrate Mother's Day?

not sure yet. MH is working a half day and then after that i am not sure what he has planned...probably something low key.

    (6) What brand of diapers and wipes do/will you use?  What do you like about them?  What don't you like?

we primarily use green mountain diaper prefolds with thirsties duo covers. i love the GMD prefolds b/c they come in several sizes so you don't have to fold them down to use them (adding more bulk). the thirsties duo covers are great (so are bummis) b/c they have a double leg gusset that contains messes.... we've yet to have a single blowout! *knocks on wood*

i also have some goodmama fitteds we use for night time, and some BG organic AIOs and sposoeasy AIOs too

we use cloth wipes with a spray water bottle - works just fine and is cheap :)

what i tried and didn't really like:

flip covers - couldn't get a good fit w/the snaps

bumgenius 3.0 - these were ok but i try not to use microfiber since over time it holds stink unlike natural fibers.  never had a leak or blowout w/these but i always worried about one b/c I never felt like i got as good of a "seal" around the legs like w/the thirsties double gussets

thirsties AIO - she always leaked in this diaper, even when i added an insert.  this is also a synthetic inner.

bottombumpers and very baby AIOs - good b/c they are all natural fibers; these were ok too but i did not love them.  never had a leak or blowout w/these but again, i never felt like i got as good of a "seal" around the legs like w/the thirsties double gussets

    (7) What is the best thing about being PG or being a mommy this week?

nothing new, but I always love to hear her laughing and giggling.  BEST.THING.EVER :) and it doesn't seem to take much to get her to do so

    (8) Where does/will your baby sleep?

she sleeps in her crib.  she naps there or in our bed sometimes too.  if we are out and about and she falls asleep in her infant seat we let her stay asleep in there until she wakes up.  she's never napped in her bouncer or swing.

Mamas: Now that you're a mother do you find yourself doing anything that makes you say,"Wow! I am just like MY mother!"  If so, what is it?

not yet, but i am sure as she gets older I will.

I haven't spoken to one since we came home - I did see several while still in the hospital though, and this is the plan of action that all of them gave me. I don't know if it would be helpful to talk to another one or if they'd just tell me to keep doing the same thing...

Just supply issues or more? Not sure what "more" would be, although I'm certainly having emotional issues over this...

  • Lisa (Redshoegirl) Keep doing what you are doing!

I never had a drastic supply issue but my milk did come in a little on the late side and was a little light (compared to the oversupply that happened on down the line).  At the same time I honestly felt like I could drink water all day and not have enough.  An LC told me that my body was really on overdrive trying to detoxify my organs (remember, I had pre-e symptoms and then after giving birth I had severe edema = sure signs my liver hated the pg me) on top of trying to make milk.  There really wasn't anything I could do but keep drinking water (and recharge, a gatorade type drink) and wait for my body to catch up - the drugs they make that could help with the orangs interfere with milk production (and probably are not safe for breast milk anyways) - how's that for ironic....

Obviously my body wanted to nourish my baby and make milk, but it was also trying to clean itself up at the same time so everything just happened a little more slowly.  Maybe that is what is going on with you too, because your body was totally pushed to the limit, more than I can even dare to imagine, while growing those cute little boys - hopefully everything will get back on track soon. just keep doing what you are doing = drink lots of water/liquids and let them nurse as often as possible   :)

I'm sorry, I mean in addition to supply are you having issues with latch, soreness, etc.?  I think if it's supply perhaps time is a virtue and you just keep doing what you're doing and your body will catch up. I think it's great you're giving yourself a month before making any real decisions.  Also, not that you need to hear this, but stress can affect your supply.  So if you can, relax about the bfing...know that you're doing the best that you can and that is all you can expect of yourself.  I know when I am stressed at work and I try to pump I barely get any milk, but if I relax for a couple of minutes beforehand (taking a "mental vacation") my milk letsdown just fine.

The first 8-12 weeks your body is just getting used to not being PG anymore, etc.  Because your body was maxed to the limit it may take some time for it to regulate...be kind to yourself...keep on keepin' on and see what happens. (((HUGS)))

  • (1) What week are you in/how old is your LO?

    12w1d

    (2) How are you feeling? Any new milestones or news in the last week to share?

We have Kaya sleeping in her crib now because having her in bed was just not working for me.  She is a very active sleeper and her kicking and squirming were waking me up constantly.  We've been putting her on her tummy even though it worries me a little still.  She does sleep much better, though, and doesn't fight so much when we do put her down.  She gets up 2-3x still but at least it's not every 2 hours anymore.

In other news, I go back to work tomorrow night!  Yikes.  12 weeks sure flew by.  I'm both excited and terrified.  The good thing is that we have her bedtime routine down so Brady really just has to bathe her and feed her and then put her to bed.  He'll probably have to feed her once or twice overnight but I get home around 7:30 am so hopefully he can feed her once and I can just nurse her when I get home.

    (3) Next appointment date?  Any big ultrasounds/other exciting stuff coming up?

Kaya's getting shots in about a week.

    (4) What is one BR thing that you learned this week?

That there's a theory that SIDS is caused by toxic gases released from the crib mattress.  Scary stuff and it makes sense to me.  I just wish there was more research and a definitive answer.

    (5) What are you doing to celebrate Mother's Day?

No idea.  I'll probably sleep most of the day since I work Saturday night.

    (6) What brand of diapers and wipes do/will you use?  What do you like about them?  What don't you like?

We have a plethora of diapers.  We use prefolds that I got from Abby's Lane, but Kaya is just about outgrowing them so I bought some GMDs in a bigger size (red stitch).  We have Thirsties, Bummis and Blueberry covers.  I like the Blueberry covers the best as far as preventing leaks, but they get stinky kinda quickly.

For overnight, I'm still figuring it out because Kaya is a heavy wetter.  So far the thing that has worked best is the Blueberry pocket diaper with an extra hemp insert (Joey Bunz).  I also like the BumGenius 3.0 pocket with the same extra hemp insert.  A lot of people like FuzziBunz for overnight but they have almost always leaked for us.  Not sure if it's a fit issue, but I don't like them at all.

For wipes, we just use wet wash cloths that we designated to use as wipes.

    (7) What is the best thing about being PG or being a mommy this week?

Now that we've got Kaya in a routine and napping often, she is a much happier baby.  In fact, she's rarely fussy anymore other than when she's hungry.  I love that I can just look at her and smile and she smiles back.

    (8) Where does/will your baby sleep?

    See #2

Mamas: Now that you're a mother do you find yourself doing anything that makes you say,"Wow! I am just like MY mother!"  If so, what is it?

I've always known I was like my mom in a lot of ways.  As far as mothering, though, I'm not sure yet.  We'll have to see.

same with us.  At first I thought it was just because they had snaps but I really like the Bum Genius Organic one size AIO with snaps so it just has to be their design doesn't work for us.

For a microfiber pocket I much prefer the Bum Genius 3.0.  I actually have quite a few of those b/c I thought that is what his daycare would require.  Now that he's going to a different center where almost all the babies are CD'd they are completely fine with prefolds and covers.  Oh well, it's nice to have the "easy" diapers for out and about, and for babysitters

Oh! Sorry, sleep deprivation = was totally not able to understand what you meant lol. No latch issues, and some soreness but I think not more than usual (or maybe it is, since my boobs are getting used more than average? at any rate, it's not agonizing).
