What former home owners/tenants leave behind

When we bought our new home this spring, we weren't surprised by anything too bad, but we did have two WTF moments:  Her water line on her fridge leaked and led to water damage all through the cabinet against the fridge.  We also couldn't figure out why the garbage disposal wouldn't work and looked into it to find out it was full of rocks.  Rocks!  Ridiculous.

What has your former home owner/tenant left for you to find in a house or apartment?

Re: What former home owners/tenants leave behind

  • Rocks? WTF?

Um, I think either our disposal or dishwasher leaked at some point because the former owner left behind a soaked through cabinet between the sink and DW. New owner doesn't seem to be intent on fixing it (the cabinet), which means we get to battle pests.

We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • A drawer full of old spoons?  Also, they left us a bookshelf they no longer wanted (we agreed to keep it) and when we moved it we found some old books and toys and about 8 years worth of dust.  Mmmm.
  • A massive safe in the basement. Apparently it's been there for the past few homeowners. There's no way we could move it without heavy machinery of some sort.

    Wrong on so many levels.

  • Yeah, I wasn't thrilled with how much she left behind. Her nasty old kitchen mats. Blech. Apparently she moved in a hurry. I'm sure I'll still be uncovering things the next couple of months. The caulking gun did come in handy this week when we recaulked the bathtub.

  • Mostly just seeing the work of horrible contractors.  They did a pretty good job with getting rid of stuff. They did leave a garbage can that was brand new, so we are still using that.  They left some garage tools as well, but we told them that was okay.  I have left cleaning supplies behind before, but that's the extent.

  • When we moved into the house there was a collection of the stuff you'd leave out on the curb gathered in the livingroom.  Rest of the place was clean, but there was a random pile of shiit in that one room.

  • Nothing was left at our place as it had just been completely rehabbed by a contractor.  But friends of ours found used syringes on top of their cabinets - they now think there were some squatters while the place was vacant.  YUCK!

Holy cow!  I want to buy houses from those people!  An elliptical plus a charcoal grill?  Totally makes up for the cat hair in the fridge!

Very true. I didn't know how to feel. It was like

"I like the 'always kiss me goodnight' art. But I don't like the kitty litter." "I like the elliptical. But I don't like the nasty kitchen mat."

  • When I bought my house there was a random collection of junk - mostly in the attic.  An old bench, lightbulbs, some tools, extra gardening fencing, extra siding, some scrap wood, a wierd golf sign and a couple clubs (which was odd since I bought my house from a 74 year old single woman).  There was also about 8 cans of white paint, leftover wallpaper, a roll of horrid linoleum, some sort of caustic cleaner that leaked all over the inside of the bathroom cabinent and ruined the base of it, some Tilex and a squeegee.  Plus the hideous lace curtains and pink mini-blinds and a houseplant.  It was stylish.
  • One of the homes DH and I rented in college the previous renters left a huge a** dining room table!  It was nice bc we didn't have to purchase one ourselves.  =0)
  • A table

A treadmill. Yup, you read that right. I sold it at our yard sale!

    Kids toys

Tennis balls all over the yard

That's all I can think of now!

  • A bunch of stuff in the shed including: pounds and pounds of baking soda to regulate the pH in the pool, a bunch of pool toys, tons and tons of potted plants, a small sample bottle of tylenol, some sweet shelving in the basement, some wood in the fireplace, 2 hoses and a couple nozzles for the hose. I think there was a bunch of other stuff too.
