Gift Help (Graduate Student)

My sister graduates at the end of this month from Brandeis. She'll be getting a Masters of Arts and a Masters of Public Policy.

I'm at a total loss of what to get her. She is almost 30, so I don't want it to be something hokey.  At the same time I want it to be meaningful.

Any suggestions?

Re: Gift Help (Graduate Student)

  • her diplomas framed and matted together (in one frame, two 'holes' for the dipolmas).

I wish I had mine framed (or even knew where they were) at this point.

  • DH will be getting his diploma framed as well as a nice leather briefcase that will hold his laptop.

  • What's your budget like?

I generally think one can never go wrong with a gift of diamond earrings, but that may not be appropriate/feasible for this occasion.  Smile

  • Honestly? When I got my grad degree, what I most appreciated were checks and gift cards because the economy sucked and those were incredibly helpful when I was trying to piece my income together through part-time jobs and freelance work.

But if you want to go the gift route, the diamond earrings are really nice. A nice pen or a briefcase would be good too. Actually, my sister got me a gorgeous pen for helping with her wedding and it's one of my favorite gifts. But then, I'm a geek like that...

  • I don't know if it's too vague, but a nice monogrammed portfolio would be nice as well.

Ha! I thought about that, but they're a bit above my budget. I'm looking at $250 or less.

I might just give her a check. She's getting married later this year or early next year and they're a little cash poor, so I'm sure it would help.

I wouldn't have to give her a gift on her actual graduation day since she's moving back to Austin a week later.  I might just talk to her about what she would like and go from there.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Very helpful!

This was going to be my recommendation as well. I got one as a gift and use it all the time for important meetings / interviews.
