Need info. about Lumberton
We are getting stationed at Dix/McGuire, and I'd like to know if Lumberton is a good, safe area to live. Also, is there any shopping (grocery, retail), or do you have to go to another town? Any other information is also good. Thanks so much!
Re: Need info. about Lumberton
I live in Mt. Laurel and it is definitely closer to all malls, and have Targets, WalMarts, and all supermarkets within a 5 minute drive. Mount Laurel schools are very good and there are certainly some good preschools in the area. Generally, all neighborhoods in Mt. Laurel are safe and family friendly. Out of the towns you detailed above, that'd be my pick.
Mt. Holly - not a fan. Not the safest area and the schools are not great. I wouldn't go that direction.
Cherry Hill - this is where I grew up. As with many large towns (mini city almost) there are good and bad areas. The "bad" area of Cherry Hill is not dangerous or urban. Generally, any area you pick in Cherry Hill should be fine, but some developments are nicer than others. As for schools, the school system is good for elementary kids and there are plenty of preschools. As for the high school, I think the high school on the west side (i am an alum) is changing a lot, and not for the better. But, I am not basing that on any particular experience just what I've heard.
Lumberton has some really nice new construction homes because it is more rural. I'd go Mount Laurel over any of the others. It is closer to the city, less rural, and has some nice neighborhoods and good schools.
Lumberton is a very nice town with a good school district. It's much closer to base than Mt. Laurel or Cherry Hill. It's nicer than Mount Holly. There is section with apartments and townhomes that aren't as nice. This section is seperated from the rest of the developments by a main road. The majority of the town is single family home neighbors- many being new or newer construction. 3/4 of the schools are newer. There are nice pre-schools in the area. The Shoprite, Lowes, and Wawa are big and clean. The Walmart is just okay. Target is 10 minutes away (along with Bed, bath, & Beyond, DSW, Wegmans, and more) and the mall is 15 minutes away. It's not the city life, but it certainly isn't the middle of nowhere with most people living in developments- think lots of kids outside playing.
What developments are you looking at?
Good luck!
I agree with pps-Lumberton is good and so are Cherry Hill and Mount Laurel but you may want to stay away from Mt Holly. Mount Holly does have some beautiful homes but there are some parts that aren't that great. Before we got married, my husband had a place in Burlington which has a good school district and had a direct route to base but I forget the name of the road, so you may also want to check out Burlington, but just make sure not to look at Burlington City-big difference between the 2! Good luck!
If you were considering Burlington you will be fine with Lumberton in terms of shopping and travel time to good places. There is a "mall" actually in Burlington, but I wouldn't recommend actually going there...
DH lived in Lumberton his whole life until we got our first place. MIL still lives there. I worked at their middle school. I have several friends who live there. They like it and they are happy with the schools their children attend.
Coming in a little late but...
DH and I live in Mount Holly and we really like it here. We live in the Mount View section, which is a quite, cute little neighborhood. Plenty of restaurants and shopping locally within 3-5 minutes (Acme grocery store, Staples, CVS, ect), in addition to bigger stores (Target, Home Depot, WalMart) within 10-15 minutes. Our neighborhood is starting to "turn over" from WW2 veterans to 20-somethings just starting families. Most of the houses are ranches or split-levels and are well kept. There is a section of town that is lower income, but there hasn't been any trouble in my neighborhood in the 3 years we've lived here.
Honestly, I don't know much about the schools except that we hope to move before we have kids old enough to go there. The district is Rancocas Valley.
I know the other girls didn't have many nice things to say about Mount Holly, but I wouldn't write it off based on that. I'd be happy to give you more info if you have any questions- just let me know. Good luck on your search!
