Lindsay T , re: Lasik

You gotta tell us all about the lasik. It makes me shiver thinking about it so I gotta know, was it bad? did it hurt? If you have an eye touchy phobia like me could you have done it?

  • BIP...

I watched Steve get Lasik done and it was pretty amazing. He said he felt nothing - but they gave him a Valium and numbing drops in the eye. We spent what seemed like forever at the eye doctor so they could re-check his eyes and get them all ready for the surgery and it took like 10 minutes total to do the surgery and that's from time he went into the room to the time he walked out. And he walked out seeing. No problem. He went from 20/400 to 20/30 right away and 2 days later he was at like 20/15. He went home to sleep after that but I think that was the valium. He seemed to have some slight discomfort but he said it was like having something in his eye. But no real problems with it or complaints.

I have an eye touchy phobia and I've been hesitant to get it done in the past but I've had several friends do it and had nothing but rave reviews. I think it might be something I do for like my 30th (and waiting that long for no other reason so that I can save up the cash instead of having to put it on plastic).

  • Ick! You watched it? Oh nooooo... I have a hard enough time sticking Dex's eye drops in his eye. Hahaha
  • Yeah I wasn't sure I would - or could - watch it but it wasn't all that bad. I mean it was a little gross, and I don't know if I would watch it again, but it was ok.
  • BIP - I got it done maybe 4 years ago now? Geesh..that's awhile back. I had really bad vision - farsighted. I had like -8.75 in the left eye and -8.25 in the left eye...I was blind as a bat. This was my experience, I think it can vary per surgery.

The surgery is really easy, and I was awake for the entire thing. The nurses and doctors were really nice and helpful when they are poking your eye out and calming you during the entire procedure. They put anethesia and numb your eye, then they take you to the eye machine and take a picture of your eye. Using some "Wavelength" technology, and then they use this machine to keep your eyelids from closing, it's like something out of that Stanley Kubrick movie - how your eyes all look plucked open. Not scary, but you feel funny - it feels like a shot of air being directed on your eyes...but it's really the "laser" on you. Then they switch eyelids, and do it again.

Then it's over, they give you goggles so you don't open your eyes until a couple hours later, and you get directed out, and get medicine for your eyes. You have to keep your eyes moist for the next couple of hours, I was able to watch tv later that night...but with my goggles on. When they had checked my eyes, I was 20/15 for my follow up visit. Overall, the procedure is fast and it's over before you know it. I was holding on tight to a teddy bear that they gave me throughout the entire procedure because you know that reflexive fear that someone is poking your eye and hurting you? The nurses calm you all throughout it, so I felt fine and safe. I'd do it again in a heartbeat and recommend everyone to do it..it's one of the best investments I've ever done for my poor eyeballs.
