Ok, so I know ny'ers have this obsession with "best" cupcakes...or at least I do! I craved cupcakes throughout my pregnancy and post-partum, I had cupcakes at my baby shower and ever since I had an eggnog cupcake from Sweet Revenge over the holidays I've been craving that cupcake perfection. It was OMG - so much that during insane xmas-traffic-leaving-the-city, we made a side trip in a car to pick up another one!
I know we've talked about this before, but which is your favorite bakery? I just had a friend bring over a sampling from Billy's Bakery, and although the carrot cupcake was spot on, I'm less than thrilled with their chocolate/vanilla. And no, I'm not agreeing with the awesomeness that everyone claims is Magnolias. Their cake part of the cupcake is less than perfect. Just some Thursday evening thoughts, hee hee.
And...discuss....
Re: a cupcake mission!
YAY! I love cupcakes. There is this place called Cupcake Cafe near Union Square - it is also a children's bookstore. They have the most beautiful cupcakes decorated with beautiful (frosting) flowers. They are also tasty, but they win the beautiful prize by me.
Then there is Two Little Red Hens on the UES and they have really scrumcious old fashioned type cupcakes! The vanilla cake with chocolate fudge is a classic and really hits the spot. That is honestly my favorite.
The place we went to after Essex - I thought the vanilla cake with chocolate almond frosting was amazing! And you can't beat the price! Although I thought the salespeople were unfriendly so I wouldn't really want to hang out there. They are super friendly at Cupcake Cafe and Two Little Red Hens.
When I first moved here, I had Crumbs, which I thought was really cool (great selection of unique cupcakes), but they are tooo sweet! After trying Two Little Red Hens I was quickly over Crumbs and no longer go there!
I looooved the lemon cupcake at the place by Essex.
I have to agree with you Liz about both Magnolia's and Billy's.
My favorite cupcake right now is the Dulce de Leche from Big Booty Bread Company on 23rd St. They usually only have like 3 or 4 different cupcakes but the Dulce de Leche is my absolute weakness.
Crumbs is good but I think it's overrated. The CupcakeStop truck is usually pretty good too.
Is the place by Essex called Sugar Sweet Sunshine by any chance? Bc that is my favorite cupcake shop in NYC! Agreed the lemon cupcake is delicious and the pistachio one made with real pistachios! Also if you're in the mood, their banana pudding and chocolate bombs are delicious!
I can't eat eggs, so I can't eat cupcakes at the usual places like everyone else... boo hoo.
Therefore the only place I can suggest is Babycakes, because they do vegan/gluten-free etc. and therefore I know they are safe for me!

Yes, that's them!
lol, I remember the first time I went there and brought a few cupcakes home. I didn't even make a thing to DH about them being Magnolia's, but I had to laugh when he wouldn't even finish his first cupcake. He did NOT like them at all.
and the cupcakes at Sunshine (is that what we said the name was?) were only $1.25 which is fantastic compared to everywhere else.
This weekend I am going to try out this Cupcake Stop truck you speak of!
Yeah, prices at Sweet Sunshine were amazing! Too bad I don't live closer to it!
I love Sugar Sweet Sunshine! For me, their cupcakes are light, fluffy, taste great and have just the right amount of frosting. I did not like Magnolia at all-- too dry and the icing was not good.I am really not into super-sweet icing mounded on, but that's just my own preference.
I've also had sweets from Babycakes recently and that was delicious too. Good if you are vegan or need gluten-free.
That stinks. Did you check their site for locations and hours? I know I was upset when it wasn't at the Flatiron location, I hadn't realized that was just Tues & Thurs.
I DID! It wasn't there
Is it usually where it is scheduled to be?
