Possibly changing schools.

So we have all kinds of drama in my department right now, and it looks like I might be moving to the high school. I have very mixed feelings about this- I have been in the junior high for ten years now. I am very comfortable in this building, I know everyone, I have my own classroom (well four teachers teach in the same room, but I only teach in that room).

I will have to learn at least three new classes if I move up to the HS. I will not have my own room, and will have to move all day. I like the thought of a challenge, but it is overwhelming to think of so much change. Just the thought of packing up my classroom is overwhelming. I would seriously need a moving van- and where the heck would I put that stuff?

I should hear more info. on Tuesday. I wish I was choosing to move, then I might really be excited.  A change could be nice, but I just don't know what to think...

Re: Possibly changing schools.

  • I have a lot of friends that are teachers and I know that with the economy and cuts that are happening many of them are happy to have jobs..... BUT one of them DOES travel and she is a HS Spanish teacher. She really prefers it to having her own room!
  • I had to switch age levels the year after we got married. I wasn't to happy about it at first but now i absolutely love it and it was a great change. I didn't have to move buildings or anything like you do but the change was for the best.
  • Thanks ladies. I just hate the fact that (almost) the entire dept. has to be shuffled because of the ineptitude of one teacher. Arrgh. But hopefully a little shuffle this year will keep me employed for a long time!

Maybe no room will be freeing. Less cleaning, less organizing... less decorating!

  • Ugh. What a head ache, Katie. I hope you get some information about all of this soon that will put your mind at ease. Stressful.
  • Change is scary but you'll manage.  You're so dedicated.

I get threatened by the principal every year to move and I have to argue my way out of it every time.  I know if I do get moved I can do it, but it's a scary change.  And I'm just talking elementary grade level changes, so it's nothing like what you're facing, but it still terrifies me.

You've been doing this for a long time so it may be really refreshing.  I hope everything works out for you.  Hang in there!

  • Thanks ladies. I would (will) have at least one new prep next year, regardless- but three in the HS is kind of scary. It also means I would be following my current eighth graders up. They are a good group, but... I'm just unsure.

Nami- my husband teaches sixth and there was discussion of someone from the "upper" el. having to move to "lower" el. Apparently they don't want any Ahhnold comparisons made, so the principal has made it clear his spot is safe!

Good luck to you, too! I would love to think that we are all lucky enough to keep our jobs in this economy, at least!
