Clicky Poll #2: get a kitten now? or wait? or never?

I really want a kitten. Have been asking DH for one for months. There are two things keeping me from running out the the shelter & just adopting one.

#1 - our current cat. Not sure how he's gonna react. He's a total momma's boy, and can be territorial. That's why I'm going with a kitten. I figure less of a threat. Although I'm a little concerned about the first time we leave them together alone.

#2 - DD's age. She's 19 months. Loves our current cat, who is semi-tolerant of her. Even though she wouldn't be unsupervised with it, I'm a little concerned about her being a little to rough with a little kitten.

I am thinking I should hurry up & get one though, so that if we (hopefully) do get to move soon, our current cat isn't adjusting to a new kitten & a new house at the same time.

WDYT?[Poll]

  • I'm a sucker for cats; which is probably why we ended up with 4!

I would get one. Why not? You only live once  Smile

We ended up with our last cat because DH went to Petsmart to get food. He fell in love with it, and when he saw someone else ask about it - he grabbed the employee and said he was adopting it. We've adopted a few cats from the shelter that has animals at Petsmart. Again, we're just suckers!

  • Wouldn't you be worried about kitten claws scraping DD?
  • No. That little and they won't do much damage, but might teach DD how to handle pets.

Current cat scratched DD once, about a year ago. We put the claw-cover-thingies on him once, and he's never done it again. He's swatted at her, but never again with his claws out.
  • I love cats. We have two of them. Speaking from experience, we had a difficult time assimilating a kitten into a home with an adult cat. The kitten was just too playful for our five year old. I'm not telling you not to do it, but you need a strategy. We kept our cats apart for about a week and we gradually introduced them to each other.

I would put a sock on my hand then use that hand to pet one cat, take off the sock and give it to the other cat. It was a non-threatening way to get her used to the other cat's smell. The last thing you want is a territorial cat pissing all over your house.

  • I voted no, but don't listen to me! Ha I am jaded right now. DH had 2 cats when I met him so they are still his cats if you ask me. I always wanted a cat growing up and my parents always said no, now I know why! They are so much more work than my dog! The hair is just insane, the litter - food - treats etc... they get expensive! Plus... our female cat decided to go in the closet when I was getting ready for work and I didn't realize it so she got shut in there all day and was mad so she peed on my $400 comforter that I take off the bed so the cat hair doesn't get on it! UGH... now I hate cats! DH took the comforter to the dry cleaner and told them if they couldn't get the smell out he would have to either get rid of the cat or me and he would hate to get rid of either  lol... I was secretly hoping the smell wouldn't come out and the cat would be history. No such luck!
