Popular movies you don't understand?

Hi hi hi!

I finally figured out that I actually have to type the code for the line breaks to show up on my posts! Haha sooo.... i think I'll try my first somewhat comprehensible itouch post!

so I'm watching pulp fiction and my question is, what popular movies are out there that you never understood or got into? You know, the movies that when you say you don't like them, you are met with an incredulous "WHY?!?! That was the best movie EVER!" and you just shrug your shoulders & can't give an answer????

THOSE movies =)

Re: Popular movies you don't understand?

  • Citizen Kane. I fell asleep. Twice. "Best movie ever made" my ass...

More recently, Inglorious Basterds. I'll fully admit I'm NOT a Tarantino fan anyway, but I really didn't see why people loved this movie.

Oh, and Avatar. Sure it LOOKED pretty, but plot wise? Booooooring! It was basically Pocohontas with extra tall Smurfs, like so (sorry for the scrolling):

  • These are my movies.... I have no doubt they are great movies, but I myself never got into them for some reason....

    in no particular order

oceans 11- I always fall asleep when everyone meets everyone. I always wake up when the guy discovers he's been set up.

    2. top gun- I always fall asleep after goose dies. I wake up at the very end when Tom cruise reunites with the chick.

    3. Swingers- Vince Vaughn aggravates me. I feel like I wanna punch someone.

    4. pulp fiction- I'm just so totally lost all the time!

    5. That one movie with Jim carrey and Jennifer aniston- I always get distracted & and up doubt something else after Jim carrey after he makes Jennifer anniston's ladies double in size.....

  • Before I even read your post and just saw the subject, I was totally thinking Pulp Fiction! I get so confused, too. B loves that movie. Also, The Matrix. I haven't been able to get through it without falling asleep.

  • Sin City.  Worst movie ever.  The part where  Elijah Wood is sitting against the tree with his legs cut off made me feel ill.  I dont understand the cult following......

Oh and anything by Quentin Tarantino.  I know lots of people think he is a genious but I think he is more of a masochist. I just dont get how someone can have such dark thoughts and not be nuts....lol.

  • I agree with Avatar, Lisa.  Pretty, but boring and predictable plot line.  I watch movies for the story and character development....not the effects.

I know I'll catch crap for this but.......Star Wars.  Never got it.  Sorry!!!  :)

  • I liked Kill Bill & Pulp Fiction, although there were definitely moments that made me squeamish in each. I read a lot of comics as a teen and I think his films really tie into that culture.

Movies stress me out tons. I don't really like watching them, which is weird, I know.

I hated 2001: A Space Odyssey. Anything by Kubrick, really.

I actually really liked Avatar even though the plot is expected/modeled after Pocahontas and Fern Gully, because I watch movies in the theaters primarily for the effects (esp in IMAX/3D) so I watched Avatar twice in the theaters (IMAX once and RealD the 2nd time) and loved it both times, but I'm not getting the DVD. Any other movie with no effects, no matter how good it is, I rather wait until it comes out on Netflix because I don't see why I need to spend more money to see it on the big screen if it weren't for the effects.

But I don't like the over-the-top artistic movies, like Sin City or Hero.

With that said, I don't remember Pulp Fiction at all (MH loves that movie and every time he brings up a scene from it, I just give him a dazed/confused look). But now after this post, I don't feel so bad that it wasn't memorable to me because I'm not the only one =) I also didn't get the Matrix hype either--I thought it was just an okay movie. I liked the Kill Bill series though, but I guess that's probably because (as Netflix pointed out to me), I like movies with strong female leads.

On a side note, I don't really like Borat and I hated Bruno. I hated Bruno so much that I don't like admitting that I watched it =P

  • 1. Avatar - Most overrated film of 2009, imo.  Stick out tongue  I saw a trailer for it on tv and in those 45 seconds, it pretty much told me everything I needed to know about the plot and how everything was going to end.  I have zero interest in seeing this.  And I don't know, there's something about the blue people that bother me.  They sort of weird me out.

2 & 3 (tie) Star Wars and Star Trek - Yes, the entire series for both of them.  I just don't get why so many people LOVE these movies.  Star Wars is getting ridiculous.  I understand that the trilogy was pretty groundbreaking back in the day but the most recent movies?  George Lucas, aren't you're already a gazillionaire?  Do you really need more money??  And Star Trek, how do I keep track of all your tv series AND movies?

    4.  The Godfather - I've never seen this movie.  And people give me weird looks when I tell them.  Am I really missing out on something THAT important?

    5.  I may get flamed for this but I'm gonna say it anyways, the Twilight movies.  I probably would have loved these if I was suddenly a goth-y teenager again but I'm not.  Stick out tongue

    SHUN.

I am shunning you and all of your ilk who aren't properly nerding up with these series! Well, the original Star Wars trilogy, anyway. We can pretend like the other three were never made, much like the third Godfather movie. Oh wait, you probably haven't seen that either, right?!? (Although that's probably actually a good thing lol.) Wink

But I DID go and watch the Star Trek with your beloved ZQ.  Doesn't that grant me a pass?

If not, I bet this will....

LOVE LOVE LOVE Star Wars. The Godfather is the BEST ever. Part II is actually my favorite, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino are so hot! I'm just really into the whole mafia thing. I actually had Godfather nights at my house for a couple of my co-workers who hadn't seen the series and they loved it too.

Anyway to answer the original question the one movie that comes to mind is A Clockwork Orange. I don't even want to venture into reading the book either, I won't understand it.

  • I love these responses!!!! (sorry for bad grammar in my posts too. Mobile nesting isn't easy for me cause my format box is funky)

I'm so glad to read the pulp fiction comments too. I totally thought I was just not getting it.

lisak: your star wars comment cracked me up! I actually tried watching the most recent one on DVD. I remember falling asleep but I can't add it to my list yet. I need to try watching it again to see if I get the same reaction.... Haha the ones above that I fall asleep to, it happens every time Ive tried to watch the movie. In the case of top gun, that would be decades! Haha

I saw twilight 1 and I also wanted to smack that chick and tell her to grow a spine. I know. I'm mean. But I'm not feeling the teenage melancholy... Teenage angst expressed in song, however, is great (coming from a glee fan!) hehehe

  • Oops, I meant star TREK not star wars... I actually loved growing up with star wars =)

TWILIGHT EDIT: to be fair, lots of my friends said the 1st movie wasn't that good. They said in order for me to appreciate bella's struggle in the movie, I need to read the books. Which I haven't yet.

  • Oh yeah. Totally don't get the Twilight thing either. I thought the first movie was horrible and I read 1/3 of the book before I decided I just couldn't continue. The writing is so bad.

I haven't seen any of the Godfather series and I have no desire to.

  • The Matrix.  I think by the time I got around to watching it, the special effects weren't all that special anymore.

I felt the same way about this until I watched it.  THEN I finally understood all the references people were making to it.  Might be worth the watch just for that.
