AW: my 5k race!

I woke up this morning at 5:45 to get ready for my third 5k road race. This particular one was extremely important to me because my Aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer this past fall (she's already been fighting MS for the past 8-10 years). I've never been good at running. In fact, I wasn't allowed to run it in gym class because of my asthma. About three years ago, DH started running, and I thought he was a maniac. Then, two years ago, I decided to give it a try because he was always doing races and I would just wait around for him to finish. I started running a quarter mile at a time because thats all that I could do without needing to catch my breath. My first road race I finished in close to 37 minutes, and my second race I finished in 38 minutes, but I walked a bit in both.

Fast forward to this morning. The men ran their race first, and when the anouncer said, "2 minutes until the start," it started to down pour. It was raining so hard, and was so cold that it actually crossed my mind to not run today.

DH has been trying to break 20 minutes in a 5k race for the past three years, and today he finished in 19:30!!! Once he met his goal, I knew I HAD to race.

Finally, it was time for the women to line up. I saw that my ipod battery was low, and sure enough, it died in the first .1 mile.

The race was a little chilly, but I was really determined to meet my goals: finish under 36 minutes (12 minute mile), and NO WALKING. I kept thinking over and over in my head that my Aunt is so strong to be fighting against this disease, and running this race without stopping was nothing compared to what she deals with day to day.

Overall, I finished in under 35 minutes, and did not walk!!!

So, now DH and I are celebrating with beer and mexican dip..no calorie counting today haha.
