Planting tomatoes

NYC, huge patio.  I put the flowers in last weekend but was hesitant about getting the tomato plants this early.  Last year, I planted them in June and they were a disaster. Grew high but almost no fruit until October and that was inedible.

The patio has direct sun from 7 am to 1;30, appx.

When do i plant them?

We are in the 60s - 70s during the day but have a 60 degree spell coming for about a week.

 Thanks!

Re: Planting tomatoes

  • You can plant them now.

The tall with no fruit thing is usually caused from too much fertilizer early on--it causes rapid shoot growth at the expense of setting flowers/fruit.  So no high nitrogen fertilizer ilke Miracle Grow and you should see less vertical growth and more blossoms.
