Like Kellie, my background is all from HGTV viewing and looking at homes online but...I agree with the light colored wood w/ dark walls. I REALLY like the idea of the dark walls and, as potential buyers (well...if the house were in our area), DH and I would definitely be drawn to a place we felt was "finished," which is the vibe I'd get from a thoughtfully painted bathroom.
Could you paint the wood on the medicine cabinet white or beige? That would look very modern and play off the dark walls well.

I was thinking a navy maybe but I can't really tell what color those little diamonds in your tile are. You could then jazz it up with cream and red or cream and black towels.
Oh, d'uh Sally, read the whole post and don't just look at the picture! Could you do a feature wall type thing where one wall is dark and the others are beige?
We did that in our bathroom with looks to be similar in size to yours but we did it using cream and black.
Go with brown only if they plan on changing the fixtures as well. The reason I say this is because the lighting doesn't appear very bright, and painting the walls a dark color could make the room feel small or cave-like. Changing the fixtures could also be a plus for potential homebuyers.
If your ILs have no intention of changing anything other than paint, go with beige to lighten up the space and keep it clean and fresh. If they want to go with a color rather than a neutral, a light turquoise would also look nice--think ocean turquoise, not aquafresh.
Thanks for the thoughts ladies. Okay, here's what we decided.
Since we're not going to change the medicine cabinet or the other medicinal cabinets, we decided to go a beige that matches the tiling. I actually really like how it turned out, and we'll use towels and a shower valance to bring out the brown. It's a subtle change, but I think it gives off a cleaner, more updated look.
