Mulch in Vegetable Garden

This is my first year with a vegetable garden and I have a 4x10 raised bed vegetable garden with some plants planted and some seed already sown (but not sprouted).  I think I am in need of some sort of mulch but I'm not sure what to put down.  I have lots of little weeds that I'm not sure how to effectively remove and I thought that some kind of mulch would help the soil stay more moist.  I have a raised bed 4x4 strawberry patch also.  I have heard of putting straw down, would this be a good idea?  What should I put down in the bigger garden?  TIA!

Re: Mulch in Vegetable Garden

  • I love using grass clippings in my garden.  Straw is fine.
  • I do mulch, but straw if fine if you can get weed-free straw.

One think to keep in mind, is that you'll want to remove the mulch from areas you'll direct sow (like carrots & radishes).

  • I put down regular wood mulch with no problems.

  • I use grass clippings on my veggie gardens and regular wood mulch in my strawberry bed (which is about the same size as yours).  Over the winter is when I covered the entire strawberry plants with straw, they seemed to come back very well this spring.
