Settling down in Charlotte?

Hi Ladies!

I doubt you'll remember, but I posted on this board a year ago asking about moving to Charlotte. DH and I moved here when he accepted a job and we're absolutely loving it. We lived in Huntersville for the first 7 months and we now live in Dilworth/South End.

We wanted to rent for a while before buying to decide if we really liked Charlotte, and more importantly, which areas we would want to settle down in. Well, like I said, we've been here a year.... and I have NO idea where I want to buy/build.

I LOOOVE living a few blocks from Uptown, but I don't want to buy a condo... so rule that out. I'm in love with Dilworth - but can't justify spending that kind of money on such a tiny (all be it charming) older home when I know what that will buy me just 20 miles outside of the city.

I seem to have narrowed it down to the Lake Norman area (specifically Huntersville/Cornelius) or the Ballantyne area. North or South?

My big thing is a nice, family friendly neighborhood - young couples/lots of kids, a good sense of "community". I guess anyone wants that though, right? Obviously schools are important. Close to shopping and dining.

Anyway, point is - do any of you live in these areas and have recommendations? I'm open to other areas in Charlotte, too, so if you love where you live - I'd love to hear about it!

I know it seems like such a silly question to ask, but I'm spending day after day driving through these areas and looking at houses and can't seem to like one better than the other.

Thanks in advance!!

Re: Settling down in Charlotte?

  • We live in Davidson (well... we have a Davidson address, but our neighborhood is on Hwy 73) in Summers Walk. We absolutely love it here. We do wish we lived in the town of Davidson, but we couldn't afford that. The whole area from exits 23-30 are great in my opinion... however exit 28 always has crazy busy traffic and I avoid it like the plague! Hope that helps!
  • i can tell you that South Charlotte has a lot of the qualities and amenities, but i'm sure North Charlotte does too b/c i always hear good things. i live really close the Ballantyne and love it. i work uptown and have about a 25 min commute in the morning. and i totally agree with what you said about getting more for your money. i love the inner city neighborhoods, but can't justify $300k (and up) for something small, no driveway, no garage, no yard, etc..

are you looking at specific neighborhoods yet? i can try to help you out with specifics if you're looking in a certain location around ballantyne. i don't know much about the schools yet.

  • We live in Huntersville, in Gilead Ridge.  We love it!  There are so many young couples on our street and we hang out together regularly.  It's a great family neighborhood and there's always community events.  The last phase is going in now, and I know there are quite a few homes for sale in the nieghborhood as well.  Good luck-it's so much fun!
  • We live just on the other side of the state line, in Lake Wylie, SC.  I work uptown and I loathe the drive, but I really love living where we do.  We were able to buy so much more for our money here in SC and we don't have the crazy high taxes that Meck County does.  The school system is also very good and not nearly as overcrowded or susceptable to the boundary changes and drama that CMS has.  It's not for everyone to be as far out as we are, but we love it!
