I lurk like mad over here but don't post a lot. I really should be more active on this board...anyway, today our farmers market had a new booth-freerange, grassfed, no hormone or antibiotic beef! This is huge for me as I live in the Hawaiian Islands and thought my only option for beef would be Whole Foods, which is of course shipped from the mainland.
Our chicken and egg source also told me today that I am welcome to come by on her processing days and take all the remains I can for our dogs-for FREE! This is awesome as I would never be able to afford humanely raised meat for them ordinarily(we feed prey model raw). Then she showed me a book her friend has just published on how GMOs and Monsanto are affecting agriculture in the Islands...I bought it and can't wait to read it.

Re: I'm in love with a chicken farmer...
BFP #2 EDD 5/19/13 Let's do this!
That's awesome! Its great meeting people in your area involved in local foods. What is the book called? I'd be interested in reading that!
Oh and I feed prey model raw too... and I can't afford humanely raised meats for them either. I do try to buy from smaller suppliers. My distributor (I'm feeding 3 Great Danes and 2 cats so I go to a big poultry distributor) has both Jennie-O and Zackie Farms turkey, and I have it marked never to give me the Jennie-O. At least the Zackie's is smaller and somewhat close.
The book is called Facing Hawaii's Future. I'm thinking she meant she knows someone on the team that wrote it, because it was written in 2006 by SEED, a farmers coalition in the Islands.
And Smiling-I also live on Oahu! The one I go to is on the North Shore-the Hale'iwa Farmer's Market. There's one in Mililani, but I know it's a lot smaller. If your friend lives closer to the Kbay side, I know there's a co-op that only has local goods in case the markets are too far of a drive. Their website is here: http://kokuamarket.ning.com/
