Anyone else petrified of the dentist??

Just typing the word makes me squirm!! I'm petrified of the dentist.  I had a cavity filled once, and the doctor said it was so high up and nowhere near the nerves that we wouldn't need novocaine.  Trusting his advise, I went with it.  Yeah, it was so near the nerve.  It hurt TONS and instilled a fear of the dentist in me.  I haven't been going nearly as much as I should in the last few years.  But, I've made an appointment for tomorrow morning with a new dentist.  I. Am. Petrified.  Anybody have any words of wisdom on overcoming my ridiculous fear???  Or does anybody work in the field - please tell me I'm not the only neurotic one out there!

  • My mom has always worked at the office I go to (she is a Dental Assistant). And I still go to her office even though I live more than 500 miles away now!

I hope you aren't still going to the dentist that freaked you out! Your fear is totally common, though. Have you told your dentist? Some patients who are particularly fearful need to go special dentists where they can be gassed before they are worked on! Others just take meds before coming to keep them calm. Your dentist is there for you, so definitely share your fears and see what they have to say.

ABSOLUTELY this.  Be open and up front about your fears.  Last time I went to a new dentist, they had a patient profile form I had to fill out that had a whole section dedicated to the "fear factor."  Trust me - they want to know ahead of time, and not during the process.

Bring a MP3 player with calming music, too.

  • My Dad is a dentist and I can tell you that you're not alone in your fear.   You just have to trust your dentist and if you don't trust them, you can - and should- find a different provider.  The one you had before was an idiot and I'm sorry that you had such a horrid experience.  It makes me so sad to hear about folks like you who have had such brutal treatment by their healthcare providers because my Dad takes amazing care of his patients and does a good job by them no matter what.

Talk to your new provider.  Explain what happened before and that it causes you anxiety.  They're going to be more than happy to hear you out so that they know how best to work with you.  They don't want you panic-y in their chair just as much as you don't want to be.

A good provider will work with you how you need to be worked with.  If you want to be told what they're doing before they do it, then they should be able to do that for you.  If you don't want to know and would rather they just did their work and left you out of it, they should be able to take care of that too.   Best of luck to you and I'm sending you calming thoughts.

Nooo way!! I'm going to a totally different practice!

I will talk to the new dentist and bring my iPod.  Thanks for the tips!!

  • This won't help now, but for the future... go every 6 months! :)

My sister works for dentists and she says she's always alarmed at how many people don't get their 6 month check-ups.  When you let it go for years, that's how small problems can get out of hand.

Yes, I'm going to start becoming more regular with dental checkups.  DH has been pushing me to make an appointment for quite some time, so I don't think he's going to let me slack off again.  And I'm thinking if I go more often, I'll be more comfortable when I go

  • I am better with the dentist than I used to be.  I think once I switched from my childhood dentist it was so much better.  Just years of memories being scared there as I kid I guess!

But I still slack off on going regularly, so thanks for posting this because it got me thinking about making that appointment soon!

  • I'm the queen of dental phobia. Especially with a new dentist, I essentially go in for an exam ( I don't trust them with a cleaning for the first visit). If I'm okay, after that, next step is a cleaning, ativan optional. As you get more comfortable, you can reduce the amount of medication you take, but start big. Sunglasses and an ipod can be a big help, to just helo you tune out. DO NOT tolerate anyone belitteling your fears- they are real, and should be treated gently.   Finding a dentist who specializes in conscious sedation is a big help, too , for major work.If the dentist doesn't get it, and you aren't comfortable with getting little things done, anything major is just going to scar you worse.

My teeth a a genetic nightmare, and I won't tell my horror story, but I can empathize.  ((HUG))
