Who Knew? Re: Tylenol Recall

Maybe I'm the last to know this, but I thought I'd post it anyway. I heard that there was a Tylenol recall on cough and cold products, but figured it was due to a defective product. I wasnt concerned b/c none of my kids was in need of Tylenol. But now DS has a cold. We had some old cold meds on hand and gave them to him for his cough and runny nose, but then we ran out. So I go to the pharmacy today to look for more. I found some cold meds but the dosages were only for 6 years and up. I asked the pharmacist what else there was and she explained that there is NO MORE cold medication available for kids under 6. She explained that the recall wasnt due to defective product but due to parents overdosing their young kids, so Health Canada made all products be recalled. So now kids under 6 have to tough out cold symptoms, unless of course it's bad enough for a visit to the doctor.?

Anyway, maybe I'm the last to know this, but I was so surprised. And now I feel bad for DS, who's nose is so runny and cough sounds so uncomfortable. :(

Re: Who Knew? Re: Tylenol Recall

  • I did hear about that, I think they did it a year or so ago. I'm surprised Tylenol has been making cough and cold medicine for young kids until now. I wonder how they've been sneaking under the radar for so long that they're just getting recalled now?

  • Hey there.  I'm a pharmacist so I'll clear some things up for you.

You have 2 very different situations confused.  The products taken off the shelf in this recall the past week were Tylenol and Motrin products for fever ONLY (except for one product) due to a manufacturing issue.  Only certain lots were affected.  See this link.

    http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/ahc-asc/media/advisories-avis/_2010/2010_67-eng.php

A few years ago they took labelling off all cough and cold products for children under the age of 2.  Last year it was expanded to include children under the age of 6.  Ultimately, what it came down to is that they really didn't even do much for kids symptoms and parents were overdosing their kids and giving multiple products leading to deaths and side effects.  The risk does not outweigh the benefit.

    Hope that helps!
