If you were going to be a doctor...

My middle sister graduates from Medical School this weekend.  I'm ridiculously proud of her and want to get her something to commemorate the occasion.  Originally I thought I'd get her some art to remember her time in the town she went to school at but it turns out that its not really a photogenic place or one that inspired someone to sit and paint a masterpiece.  :-P

If you were getting something for someone who has been working their hind end off for the last 4 years to be the best dang doctor on the planet, what would you pick??  She gave me some ideas and all of them are terribly practical.  That is fine for a birthday or Christmas but this just seems like something bigger. (she seriously asked for a toaster ladies.  You can't get a new doctor a toaster for graduation.  Stick out tongue)

Art glass?  Some sort of serving piece for the swank parties she'll have when she's not hopelessly in debt from all the school?   A set of wine glasses? Need ideas if you've got 'em.

Re: If you were going to be a doctor...

  • I know a toaster seems incredibly boring, but it's what she wants!  The doctors I know are extremely busy and appreciate the small things because of that--regardless of where they are in their career.  If you want to get her something fun, maybe collegiate scrubs or a massage membership in the city where she's been assigned?  Whatever you get her, she'll love it, I'm sure :)
    Matt loves Munkii!!!
  • Munkii has good ideas. I was also just surfing etsy for some medical themed gifts - they have some medical themed jewelry and art for sale, this is kind of neat (although I don't love the chain):

  • Hmmmm what about a nice set of writing pens or a nice bag.  Like the NICE pens...when I graduated my dad got me a really nice seude/leather bag and a set of pens with my initials engraved on them.  I used the bag and pens a lot when I was a social worker (carry court documents/files etc).  I still use the pens now and my bag for grad school.  She could tuck the pens in her super fly whte doctors coat. Big Smile
  • This may seem odd, but when i worked in a hospital, cell phones were kind of a status symbol. Depending on how much you wanted to spend, get her the latest iPhone.  I hear there's great medical apps for it, too.

I totally hear ya on this one but unfortunately pens have been my signature gift for a while so everyone I know has one already.  I gave my sisters both "power pens" as a thank you for being part of my wedding.   It isn't a Mont Blanc or anything but it is still pretty darn cool.  My pen guy went out of biz this year but he rocked.  We still email back and forth!  Stick out tongue

oooh, liking the massage idea.  That could work!

I know she asked for a toaster but it just seems so finite.  My other sister is getting her a coffee maker so I guess I just want her to not feel like she's getting appliances!  Big Smile

Oh they totally are!  I *think* that her program stipulates that they need a certain PDA that runs their software but I can check.

FUN!!  I didn't even think about Etsy!

  • Maybe get the toaster she wants and something else more personal or fun!

  • Well - I went for the toaster ladies!  I had a set of pans we got for Christmas off our registry that I no longer needed after buying some for myself so I exchanged them for a toaster.  And then I bought a way cute leaded crystal bud vase.  She gets what she wants and i get to give her something more lasting too!
