Guess who's on call to go to the Gulf?

Yup, me.

I do environmental remediation for a living, so its not a shocker.  Not sure what I'll do with the dog, but I'm hoping I get tapped to go.

  • It'll certainly be a change of pace, so I hope you get to go.  But good luck with remediation--that's some mess to clean up.
  • The scale of this is mind boggling for me.  I'm used to dealing with sorbents and LNAPL (light non-aqueous phase liquid, aka the oil floating in the gulf), but wow.  I'm the one to coordinate big field efforts in my office, I can't imagine the stress person trying to coordinate this recovery is under (not talking about execs, talking about the men/women on the ground in the field).

I'm still on call.  We keep getting updates from our corporate, but as far as I know nobody has been sent yet from our company.  Apparently they are matching our skill sets to their needs.

  • This had some good links and is being updated regularly.

I especially liked this briefing (below).  How they spoke about using an assortment of tools depending on what the conditions dictate, that's real life in the field.

  • I live in Louisiana about 60 miles from Grand Isle, which is one of the coast lines the oil may or may not hit.  We were done there over Mothers Day camping at the state park.  We went fishing in the bay area of the island to say the least it was very eye opeing to see the boom laid out all over the island.  I know this is bad, but to see it up close was SCARY!!!!!!!  It is one big mess and DH has not worked since the explosion happened (he works on the rigs--THANK GOD not the Deep Horizon). So we are hanging on by threads.
  • I don't watch the news much, so hadn't really seen the photos of the Deep Horizon until this weekend.  Holy. Cow.  I work with drillers regularly, today even, but ones of a much smaller scale.  All cut from the same mold though.  I can't imagine how scary it would've been to have been on that rig when they heard the swoosh.  I feel awful for the families of the 11 lost.
