solo road trip--have I lost my marbles?!

Back story--my MOH has lived in various states in the south (Missouri, Arkansas, now Mississippi) throught her college-grad school career.  I have been promising her for ages that I would make it down, and finally I have the time.  I am driving because airfare from Des Moines is like $500 and way beyond me.  It'll be around $100 for gas, which is much easier to stomach.  It's about a 14 hour drive, and to date the longest car ride I've been on was 10 hours (from here to Ohio), and DH drove for most of it.  I plan on stopping mid way (St. Louis maybe) to crash for the night.  I will most likely be taking DH's car since it has no history of random breakdowns like mine does.  For those of you that have road tripped for hours on end, what are your recs for making the time behind the wheel less tedious?

  • Audio books!!!!

    Audio books!!!!

    This!

  • For me its a good play list!  I love going on long car rides by myself and just singing to my hearts content.  I am a really bad singer, so I usually have to hear about it if I am with other people in the car. Also, Mt Dew to keep me up and gummy bears!!
  • Yes yes audio books! I drove back and forth from MA to NY about 6 times when I moved down here 5 years ago. Audio books kept me sane. And sing-along songs. Podcasts would be great too.

It sounds like a lot of fun!

  • A really good play-list, and caffeine source of your choice. And sometimes something to snack on.
  • Audiobooks, gas station cappucinos, and mini oreos.  I LOVE ROAD TRIPS!  I once dated a guy that lived 3 hours away in college and in retrospect think I let it go for waaaaaay past its "over" date because I loved driving there every weekend.

  • I've never done 14 hours on my own...8's been my max so far.

I suggest lots of good music, snacks, and butt exercises to keep your circulation up!

    Good luck and Safe Travels!

  • Kudos to you for doing this! My longest was 9 hrs...

I'd say audio books... and awesome old songs-like from high school era... AND tons of caffine!

    Have a great trip!!

  • Oh Oh Oh!!!

And maybe make a game out of it... like bring your camera and take pics of odd things on the way.... then, create a little photobook of it.  (ok, I just made your road trip a bit longer...)

  • Sounds like fun!  I would suggest stopping every few hours just to get out and stretch too.

  • I did Austin, TX to South Jersey in one stretch.  I felt too scared to sleep in a hotel by myself.  A good play list was key for me.  As well as some of your favorite snacks and a source of caffiene.  I never thought about audio books but they sound like a good idea too.

  • My longest is 4 hours... and I get ADHD. Good luck to you! Agree with the audio books, and maybe a Bluetooth or something so you can catch up on some chit chat with friends and family (if the state you're driving through allows it!)
  • music is key for me.  Like pp I use it as a time to sing as loud as I want.  I've driven from San Diego to Austin by myself and I loved the solitude!
  • I've been on some long road trips, WV to Cali once...yeah 3 day trip, but never on my own. On any road trip though, I always have lots of awesome snacks (some sugary, some salty) and caffinated drinks. I try to avoid water although hydration is nice, stopping to pee every 10 minutes isn't. Also, lots and lots of music on the IPOD or music playing device of choice lol. I'm like Dani, I love to sing to my tunes. And of course, sun glasses -- though those are nice for any daytime driving.

    This!

    Yep!

Yes  I love rockin' out to tunes as much as the next girl, but audiobooks are the best for long trips!
