Support your local farmers
so this is sort of random, but it's pretty slow at work here today. DH and I have been trying to eat healthier and I bought a "introductory pack" of 100% grassfed beef at the farmer's market last weekend. We grilled a steak on Saturday (which was big enough to cut in two!) and I can honestly say I don't know if we will ever buy steaks from the grocery store again. DH said the steak even beat out the ones from the Peach Stand. (South Charlotte ladies you know what I am talking about). YUM!
Re: Support your local farmers
the Charlotte Farmer's market on Yorkmont. The package we got was $52 for 15 pounds of beef, and you got 2 sirloin steaks which were over 20 oz each (so really like 4 steaks), a chuck roast and ground beef. It worked out to be about 3.50/ lb
We have a family friend that is a cattle farmer and can get us a cow pretty cheap. We are not huge beef eaters, but I figure having a steak once a week would be a nice treat. Also, if we are able to split it up with some families it won't be such an overwhelming amount of meat.
For those in Raleigh who might be interested, I know that there is a vendor at the farmers market at Falls River who sells half and quarter cows. This isn't our family friend (he's in NJ), but I've heard good things about his meat (teehee- yes I'm that immature).
Great idea. I didn't know they had that at the Farmer's Market.
Have you gotten any beef from the deli/butcher shop in Fort Mill? I think it's called J&S Deli (it's in the shopping center with the Wal-Mart) - I was in there last week and their meat looked really good!
have you tried the one on king street? i have not but i am wondering how his meat is. We have had is seafood and it is delish! I will have to alert DH about and see what he thinks.
I definitely agree with you. In addition to the beef (unfortunately I only eat burgers and dogs from cows--no steak for me--I know, I'm odd) the taste difference is even noticeable in those "cuts" of meat. Also, if you haven't tried it, farm fresh eggs and chicken are also the same--significantly "better" (but very different) tasting than conventional mass-farmed eggs and chicken. The price is very different, unfortunately, but Dh and I have agreed that both ethically and taste-wise, we'd prefer the local option over the conventional (My eggs run anywhere from $3.50-$4 a dozen)
I haven't found any local pork yet, which I'm curious to taste. And finally, I know around the Triad we have it, but I don't know if extends to the Triangle or Charlotte, but we have a "local" milk option--Homeland Creamery. The gallon of milk costs me $5, but the skim milk is delicious--if any of your DH's don't like skim milk because it "tastes like water" give Homeland a try. Even the skim milk is really creamy tasting, and although their farming practices aren't perfect in the totally "green" sense--they are really pretty darned good--and they are within 50 miles of GSO.
