Poll: To Grade or Not To Grade?

Situation: I have a pile of outlines to grade. The previous outline assignment I gave my students credit/no credit on (but didn't tell them until afterwards). I told them over and over again that THIS TIME the outlines would be graded by the rubric.

However, it's the end of the semester and I'm exhausted. It's a really really really minor assignment in the grand scheme of things. Should I...

Re: Poll: To Grade or Not To Grade?

  • I voted for grade them as promised only because I would have been the student who did it and turned it in and I never thought it was fair when teachers then gave everyone credit, etc.  Yes I was that student.  At least up until my last semester of undergrad and then grad school.

See, this is partially where my dilema is. Looking at the stack, no one is going to get an "A" if I grade it normally because no one did it correctly (despite being given VERY detailed directions...).

On the one hand, I want to grade them so they all get Cs and Ds and feel stupid for not following the template that was handed out to them in class AND that is in their textbook. On the other hand, grading a C or D paper takes twice as long, which means I'll be at this until 10:00 p.m. On the other hand (I'm a multi-handed goddess right now) why should they be rewarded with 100% for sucking? And on the other hand, why should I be punished for their sucking?

The two who voted "modified rubric," can you tell me why?

  • I voted modified rubric, and after reading your second post, I'll stand by that. Those who sucked at this assignment should simply get a "No" and those who did a moderate job should get a "sorta". No need to slave over their papers if it truly is an insignificant assignment, but no need to give credit where it obviously isn't due. I would hand out the "yeses" very sparingly.

    This.
