When to go to the beach

So, I am just wondering what you all have heard about taking a baby to the beach? Sadie will be 8 weeks on Saturday and DH's work got a Beach house for all the manager's and We want to take her to the beach.

We have a sun tent to keep her under, and hats for her to wear.  What else do we need?  What about sunscreen

Re: When to go to the beach

  • I bought sunscreen for Scarlett in the baby aisle at Target...don't remember if there is an age restriction.  I think with the tent she'll be ok, so long as she doesn't get too hot or cold.
  • I have heard NO sunscreen, even baby sunscreen until 6 months of age b/c of the chemicals...and then there are certain brands that are better (even if some are labeled as baby safe, they still have nasty chemicals that absorb into their skin).  I know Neutrogena for baby sunblock is "safe" and what our pedi recommended - but I am pretty sure you have to wait until 6 months.

Sorry if that made no sense.  I feel like I should win an award for run on sentences.

    Yes

That being said, sunscreen is better than a sunburn if you absolutely must be outside.

Here is a list of the safe sunscreens. We buy L the California Baby sunscreen at Target. It's pretty expensive, about $18 for 2.9 oz but worth it, IMHO.

  • I know that you just bought a bunch of super cute swimsuits, do you know if any of them have SPF in the fabric? I know that some of the old navy ones do, and speedo has a line too, I have heard the same thing about sunblock before 6 mos.
  • Oooohhhh, I love the California Baby brand, too!

Our ped said no sunscreen until 1 year, most say none until 6 months.  However, I know plenty of people who did use it (we started at 4 months) with no issues.  I'm with you--I'd rather not give her a sunburn.

I would recommend the UV protectant clothing for her.  Our ped swears by them, and he has 8 kids.  Just get one of the wet suit style outfits, keep her under a tent, use a hat and a little sunscreen.

I'm using Neutrogena baby sunscreen on Bebe lately and like it, although I think it is a little more oily than the California Baby stuff.

The Neurtogena sunblock is ok to use from birth according to our dermotologist.  If you dont feel comfortable using sunblock yet I would dress her in cotton long sleeved shirt and pants.  If you are in the sun tent I think she should be fine.

Yes,  All the bathing suits have like SPF or UVA/UVB protection.  I thought that, but there is a TON of skin that is still exposed.  I have hats too that have protection in it.
