IUD concerns....

I am not sure if I am posting on the right discussion board, but I am looking for some advice.

I had the Mirena IUD inserted in Feb 2010, I experienced a little spotting and cramps. A month later, I went in for a check up and everything seemed great on the ultrasound, but they couldnt find my strings. As my doc searched and searched and right when she found them, she accidently pulled my IUD out. I then had to get a new one insert. OUCH!!! I had my second check up, everything is great!

My only concern is that I have not had a period since Feb before the first insertion. No spotting, barely any cramps, nothing. I have taken tests every month except for May to make sure that I am not prego.

A few weeks ago, I was noticing some weight gain, I figured it was because I wasnt working out as much. I have some random aches and cramps in my girly parts.... Now even more common is nausea and unexplained emotional breakdowns.

I have yet to take a test, but I want to really know if it is that uncommon to experience this with the Mierna and if people have experienced no periods from when they get the IUD inserted. Any advice would be great!

Re: IUD concerns....

  • I have the Paragard but most women with the Mirena experience light to no periods. So that seems normal to me. As far as feeling strange in your lady parts, I felt a little weird at first with mine and had occasional cramps/twinges but my body eventually got used to it. If you suspect you may be pregnant, take a test again. It may be your mind playing tricks on you, that has happened to me before as well. If you have further concerns call the Dr's office where you got it inserted I'm sure they will help as well.
  • Also I know that the hormones make me gain weight and be super moody so that is not surprising either, that's why I opted for the Paragard with no hormones.
  • I had the  Mirena inserted in November 2009, and ouch is right. Unfortunately I still have periods, and I still get very odd pains in my lady parts. I have had no weight gain, and have actually lost weight and feel much better since being off the pill. I hope that helps!

  • I have the Mirena :)  I have had it since Jan09, and I think it would've been helpful if our docs would've been a little more descriptive of how the first 6 months would go because I asked a ton of questions to people that also have the mirena.  If you were on the pill, or some other form of BC prior to IUD, your body has to get used to not having those hormones anymore and adjusting to the new IUD which just has slow release hormones.  I haven't had periods either, but I still occasionally will get back cramps, and I have more chin acne when it seems like I should be on my cycle.  It took me about 6 months to get used to everything, I had mood swings, and even decreased sex drive for a couple months- I was on the pill for 12yrs prior to my mirena.  Everyone adjusts differently, but remember, as long as your second check up and your IUD is placed right you should NOT BE PREGNANT.  If you are unsure, go ahead and take a PT, but I think for the most part you are having the "normal" symptoms that come with coming off BC and getting an IUD.  If you still have ??? you can always call your Doc!  Hope this helps!  :)
  • I have had my IUD for 4 years. It is normal to not have a period. Some months I have none and others I just spot. It is also normal to cramp and have strong emotions during the time period that you are supposed to be on your period. Good Luck!
