:::Maila:::re: Medela Freestyle

Hi Malia,

Hope you had a great first Mother's Day!  I saw in the BRU Gift Card Thread below that you don't like the FreeStyle ("it sucks")...

Just curious...why don't you like it?  Are you having issues?

I have one too and for the most part really like it...I am still trying to figure out how to set the memory on it (the little person icon button on the lower right).  I do like that it's easily portable and battery operated.  Right now I only use it to pump once a day during the work week.  I may need to increase it to two if my supply tanks or if Libby needs more milk while I am at work (she takes 4-6 oz. by cup while I am at the office).

Re: :::Maila:::re: Medela Freestyle

  • The suction is bad and it is SO LOUD. I was very happy with it until my pump abruptly stopped working, as in the suction was so low I would feel a let down and only get 1/2 oz out and have to resort to hand expressing to get the rest out. It was a HORRIBLE FEW DAYS!!! I pump 3x/day 5 days/week so needless to say, I was screwed.

    Luckily, I called Medela and they immediately overnighted me a new Freestyle. I had saved my receipt, so it was still under the 1-yr warranty. Due to the bad suction, my supply took a nose dive, so I rented a Medela Symphony for a month and have been using that at work and the Freestyle at home.

    Maybe I am now spoiled by the Symphony...... It's a MUCH BETTER pump. Because I can see such a big difference between it and the Freestyle. The Freestyle suction, even at a "9" setting, is so faint that I can barely feel it. Maybe I have another faulty pump? That would be annoying.

    This is my first week without the Symphony..... If I continue to have problems, I'll have to call Medela back and see about getting ANTOHER one.... But how many times do you replace a product before you just have to admit that it's the product itself that is faulty?

    Honestly, I would prefer to rent a Symphony for the next 3-4 months that I have if I am going for a year of BFing. And I'd like my money back from the Freestyle to pay for that rental. Arg.

  • Oh wow.  I am so sorry.  I don't pump as much as you do (at least not yet) but my level 9 is a pretty strong suck.  Makes me think I need to dig out my receipt though, just in case.  I do have the box it came in.  Arg.  I hope I don't have issues.

    Sounds like renting the Symphony might be the best route if you plan to wean right at 12 months.  How frustrating!
