Rec your AT&T phone

I'm eligible for an upgrade June 13, and I'm already researching phones. This time around I'd like to have something with a full keyboard, and if I'm able to get by without a data plan, a phone that has smartphone capabilities. (I still need to talk to the people in-store to get verification on this).

I see that the Palm Pre is coming to AT&T next week and hear that gets decent reviews.

Re: Rec your AT&T phone

  • I actually hate my iphone but I honestly think its AT&T and not really the phone (except the battery issues) that make me hate it.
  • I have the Palm Pixie and I really like it. I looked at the Prix, but it was more expensive :P

  • When I looked at the Pre Plus vs the Pixi, I noticed the Pixi's keypad is just hanging out uncovered under the screen. That scares me, because I just toss my phones into my bag, and I know I'd yuck up the keypad within a day.

  • See, I've found the opposite. Everyone I know with a "push-up" phone (where the keypad is hidden) has had problems with it breaking. Usually it's that the two pieces become quickly disconnected (i.e., the cheap plastic snaps).

I throw my phone around eight ways from Sunday -- it's in with pens, keys, stopwatches, a camera, my wallet (which has a magnetic clasp), paper clips, food...I have way too much sh*t in my purse, BTW... -- and it's held up wonderfully. Plus, there are fun different backings you can pick to customize it. I have the black one (standard) and the lime green one :)

  • My current phone is a regular slider phone (the LG Shine), so I'm used to the slide, but i'm glad to hear the openness of the keypad isn't prone to yuck.

How do you like the keypad? Easy to text on?

  • I'm probably the wrong person to ask about that because I used to have the kind of phone where you had to hit each number key a dozen times to get to the letter you wanted. It used to take me 5 minutes to respond to a short text. :P

If you like the slide phone, then the Pre is probably a safe bet for you. I've never had one and I've always been steered away by my friends. I'm kind of a sheep like that.

  • Haha. this is why I'm looking forward to my first foray into a full keypad! My texting skills are HORRIBLE, and I even use the T9/predictive text. I can only text the shortest messages possible because it takes me 54 months to complete one.

  • DH has a blackberry curve (open keyboard and screen) and hasnt had any problems with it.  He keeps it in a leather slide case in his pocket -- not really the same as being thrown in a purse.  I got a plastic film to go over the screen on my iphone to prevent it from getting all scratched up in my purse -- the film looks like crap, the screen is in great shape however and I've had it for 18ish months.
  • I have AT&T, and before my iPhone I had the Blackberry Curve. I really liked the phone a lot and I didn't have a data package for it.

  • I have a Samsung Illusion (or something like that).  Its a slider with a full keyboard.  Has internet access and the whole nine, you can get it with/without a data plan.  I'm super rough on phones, they get used in the field around heavy machinery.  This one holds up alright, though I did just cash in on the warranty for the speaker crapping out.  Its easy to use and has been good otherwise.

  • Do not get the LG Neon.  It sucks really bad.  It shuts down all the time, takes forever to open things (messages, phone book, etc).

On my side of the state, they make get the data plan now for all the blackberry's.  I have the Samsung Impression.  I've owned it since January and had no problems.  The only thing I would recommend is getting a screen protector.  I now have a small scratch on the screen b/c I always just throw my phone in my purse.  I have a screen protector on my phone and it doesn't prevent me from doing anything different.

  • MrsE - did you have to get a data plan with the Impression? How is the keypad?

I love my iphone and don't have most of the issues people seem to complain about. But that's just me!

no data plan just a texting plan

I love the keypad.  No problems so far.

Edit: It had the biggest buttons compared to the others I was looking at.
