So, any tips for handwashing with hardwater?

Seems like some of you ladies have hard water knowledge. DH and I are going to try the Lemi Shine in our dishwasher now (after soaking all our dishes in vinegar to try to undo the damage already done Sad). We hand wash all of our utensils, knives, and pots and pans already. I've notice our SS pans end up with white spots on them after they dry. Any tips on how to stop that?

  • Don't let them air dry.  You need to dry them immediately after washing.

  • In addition to drying them, you might also use really hot water - it seems to not leave spots as bad.

  • I know I use the water as hot as it will go, pretty sure DH does, too. I'll try immediately drying them. Didn't realize it would be that simple! Thanks!

    BTW, I HATE HARD WATER!!!

  • Hard water is so difficult.

I read that powdered dish detergent avoids buildup better than gels.  I've had better luck since switching and I even fill the cup only half full.  I know conventional knowledge is to use more soap with hard water, but my new dishwasher manual says to use less, and it's been working better.

  • ooops, missed the handwashing part.

I just use barkeeper's friend to shine the pans up every now and then.  But I agree, drying immediately is key.

  • Yeah, we switched to powder when we found out we had hard water. (We found out when we ran our d/w for the first time at our new place and nearly ruined our silverware).  I've been using more than normal but no rinse aid, and our dark colored dishes and glasses are suffering, so I'm going to try the Lemi Shine as suggested in the thread below. If that doesn't work, we're going to switch to hand washing everything. I hate seeing all of our wonderful wedding gifts ruined.

  • Ugh, having a bad dishwasher is worse than not having one at all.

    Good luck--protect those wedding gifts!
