Two CCs stolen - how?

I have 3 credit cards.  The main one, we use for most purchases and pay it off every month.  (Use it to get points.)  The other two, one used to be my main one (Disney card) but when we used the points for our Disney trip in Dec, we knew we probably wouldn't go again until we have kids or something, so we switched main cards.  The other one is only used for gas because we get extra cash back for gas.

A month ago, the Disney card was stolen.  Right now all I use it for is two monthly charges (Netflix and EZ Pass) because I figured we should keep something on it monthly and pay it off.  I had also made a purchase at Amazon with it recently, so I figured someone got the number from one of those 3 places...

Just today, DH found that charges were made on the other card that is only used for gas.  That one hasn't been used online at all... just for gas.

Any idea how someone might have gotten both of those numbers?  I'm really nervous now about the 3rd one, trying to decide if I should assume maybe someone looked in my wallet, jotted down the numbers, and is using the cards.  If that's the case, I should get a new number for that one as well.

Who else has had a cc stolen?

Re: Two CCs stolen - how?

  • I've never had a CC stolen, but it's something I'm scared of happening.  Not sure how they got your numbers (especially the gas one), but as for the third one you might want to call the CC company and let them know the situation.  Nothing may happen with that card, but at least then you have it flagged for potential suspicious activity.
  • I've never had this happen, thank god. But that is scary jen! I hope you figure it out asap!!

  • I've never had this happen either, but I hope that you get this figured out quickly!  That is crazy that a gas card could have been stolen.  It seems like it HAD to be someone looking in your wallet.

Yeah, I'm a little bit freaked out right now...  I should clarify, the gas card is Discover so we could use it anywhere but we only use it for gas.  When I talked to DH, he said when he was in Atlanta at the end of April he used it at Six Flags because it got him 5% off the tickets.  But still, that wasn't online, and it's not connected to the other card.

It's so weird that both were stolen, so closely together, and we aren't missing cards or anything- for each of those three there is one in my wallet, and one in DH's!

Good idea to at least call the 3rd and explain the situation, maybe they can give me advice on what to do there...  I did ask the Disney company how this could have happened and they just said that the thieves can be really sneaky...  That doesn't help me to keep it from happening again! :)
