I literally cringed when I read "Bland Rapids". I was also a little uncomfortable with how much emphasis in that article was placed on the wealthy families of the city.
But overall, I thought it was a neat article and its cool to see Grand Rapids receiving national attention.
I never heard of Bland Rapids.
Also, I never saw GR to be a destitute as I see Detroit to be. Maybe it's just my perception.
But without these wealthy family, GR would NEVER where it is at never...not even close. I think that was their point of the story was that people, not goverment organizations stepped up and made things happen. I don't think this article could have been written without covering that angle. Without these weathly families, Grand Action would never been able to do what they did.
And I think Bland Rapids was a term used in the 90's when there really wasn't much going on downtown. I moved to GR just before the arena opened and did my internship for GA after the arena opened and before they started on the convention center. It blows my mind how far downtown GR has come just in 15 years.
I totally agree, GVSU. I am in constant amazement at how much these people have done for this city.
Personally, I loved the article. I think it's great that people are recognizing GR as successful, and an example of what other communities can aspire to do. Sure, we have a long way to go yet, especially with unemployment and whatnot, but there has been positive change here.
I think the actual nickname was "Bland Vapids." At least that's what I always heard when we moved here in the early 90s.
