We leave for Africa in about a month (South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana) and decided that we should get a few of the recommended vaccines - especially since we're going on a safari while we're there. Our appointment was this morning and it was over $500 each!! We both ended up getting 6 vaccines (Hep A&B, Tetanus, Polio, Typhoid, MMR, and H1N1), so at least I feel like we're pretty well protected, but still! $1K!?!?! Malaria meds are another $100 that we've got to pick up at the pharmacy tonight.
In a related story, as we were sitting in the office discussing which ones we should get and the nurse started getting things ready (on the table beside me), I started feeling SUPER hot and a lump in my throat. I tried to ignore it for 5 mins and then finally asked if there was a water fountain close by. She said no, but brought me a cup of water. Tried to drink that but realized I was about to pass out. Finally broke out in a cold sweat and looked at DH and his eyes about bugged out of his head - he said i was completely white. i asked to go to the restroom and felt better after I splashed water on my face... went back into the room and laid down on the bed for her to give me the shots... geez! I've never felt so wussy before! i've only actually passed out one time (at the dentist's office), so I guess at least I wait until i have medical professionals all around me!
Re: $1K for our Africa vaccinations!
shoot, I wish you would have posted this beforehand! you can usually go to the county health center and get them for cheaper. ;(
do they have a generic malaria med they can give you? I can't remember what I took, but it was a daily pill since I figured it would be easier to remember taking it once a day instead of once a week.
have fun!
That's crazy! Will insurance not help pay for some or is that with insurance? At least it's probably cheaper than it would be to try to get better if you caught something (let alone how scary and horrible that would be).
Hope you're feeling better now!
Oh wow, that's a lot, but definitely better to be safe than sorry. You will have a great time!
Where did you go? When I had to get vax'ed for a planned India trip I called every travel clinic in town (I don't think the county provides the specialized vax's for travel) to find one that would bill my insurance and ADC was the only one. They billed it as adult vaccinations, because my insurance did in fact cover adult vax and did not specify which ones (some ins won't cover adults, some will only cover specific ones) so I was able to get them all for only $15 instead of several hundred dollars.
You might also be able to submit to your insurance for reimbursement.
Eek.. that is a LOT for that! I wish you had posted too.:(
All I have to say is - watch out for those Malaria pills.. they will give you some hella vivid dreams!!
this, for sure! and you may or may not get the runs. let's hope for the latter...:/
yeah, we can both submit to our insurance policies and mine says that it covers immunizations 100%, but we'll see if they find some loophole around it. I didn't even think to check around - just went with the one my PCP told us to go to. duh... I'm usually the queen of finding the best deal too.
and thanks for the fainting-support! dh told everyone at softball tonight and they all felt sorry for me instead of laughing like him!
at least i feel like we're ready to go now! it's crazy that it's only a month and 4 days until we leave!
