Can I pick your brain on your Hawaiian honeymoon? I am still daydreaming about my honeymoon and DH and I both really want to go to Hawaii.

Where did you stay? What all did you do? If you don't mind me asking, was it really pricey? Everything we're looking at in the caribbean is like 6,000 including airfare and all inclusive meals, etc, and I was just wondering how much more Hawaii might be...it really is my dream honeymoon place. *jealous* TIA

The whole thing cost us about $7,000 - $7,500 including flights, 8 nights in expensive hotels, rental cars for 8 days, meals and drinks (though we're not huge drinkers), and all activities.

We flew from Chicago to Honolulu, spend the first night with a friend (so we didn't need a car or hotel), then flew out the next morning to Kauai. We stayed at the Grand Hyatt on Kauai for 4 nights. It was a seriously kick-ass hotel. The hotel breakfast buffet was included in our hotel package, and it was amazing. We ate breakfast each morning sitting next to a pool swans and koi while watching the whales off in the distance. We went horseback riding ($135pp), zip lining ($130pp), and hiking (free). We also drove around the island to see Waimea Canyon, Kilauea Lighthouse, and Spouting Horn (all free to see).

Then we took an inter-island flight to the Big Island, where we stayed at the Fairmont Orchid for another 4 nights. It was also a really expensive resort, but whereas the Hyatt left us feeling like we got the best deal of our lives, the Fairmont didn't quite seem worth the money to me. It did have some of the best snorkeling on the island, though. While on the Big Island we took a helicopter tour ($179pp), visited Volcano National Park ($10/car), got a couples massage ($179pp), and went snorkeling at the beach (free with our own equipment).

Finally we flew back to Oahu for our flight out of Honolulu. We spent our last day desperately, yet unsuccessfully, trying to come up with any possible scenario in which we would never have to leave.

It is possible to do Hawaii a bit cheaper than we did if you stay at less expensive places and rent economy cars. Hawaii was awesome and I definitely recommend it!

  • Thanks! I figured that would be about the price range and I'd have to talk to DH, but he's probably fine with it, because it's only about a grand more than our caribbean ones. YAY I may start planning a Hawaii honeymoon...for next year, when he actually has vacation time :(

Was January considered off season or was it the middle of peak season? Thanks so much for sharing, that was a huge help!

We had a hard time figuring out what "off season" really is, and eventually we concluded that there isn't really an off season. January-February has the roughest waves so snorkeling isn't as good, but it also has all the whales so it draws a lot of tourists for that. The key will be finding a good deal on flights. The prices can vary greatly but we shopped around for a while and found a great deal.

  • holy crap! I haven't looked at it, but I am now

Sandra, I was actually just looking at your Vietnam photos today and I wanted to ask you where you stayed. But which would you recommend more (for both cost and experience) -- Thailand or Vietnam?

  • ohhh...both are amazing, Thailand is just a bit more developed then Vietnam (Vietnam is prob 10 years behind Thailand) In saying this Thailand is just a bit easier to get around, and bit more touristy (but not too touristy)...lots of places in Vietnam they still have never seen a white person, and some places can be a bit dificult getting a menu in english....but there seems to be a definate 'tourist route" if you stick with that i think you would be ok. Even for me after being to asia a few times, vietnam was definately a big culture shock....

i liked vietnam alot...but i LOVE thailand, i prob would recomend it more.Vietnam is a bit cheaper but not that much cheaper then Thailand.

In thailand i would recomend Koh Samuii and any of the islands around there or Phuket and Phi Phi.

In Vietnam we went to Quy Nhon (great restort, but nothing else to do) i hear Nha Trang is supposed to be really good though, Hanoii, Hoi An (this was our fav place)

  • oh and Halong Bay.....
  • Thanks for the recs! The only problem for us with Thailand is the flight getting there. That's a really long distance from the US...from Australia it's just a hop, skip and a jump lol. I think the cost of a plane ticket would be our only deterrent but everything looks fantastic! And boy do I love me some Thai food!

I think I'm going to go to a travel agent soon and start getting some better ideas for resorts and prices on a few different places and then DH and I can decide. With his job he only gets 7 days off a year paid so if we wanted to use them all for a honeymoon that leaves no time for anything else the whole year. And if we go somewhere really far away we spend 2 of those days travelling and only 5 there. Grr! I hate his stupid effing job!

  • thats such a shame.....how much are flights??
  • raeynraeyn member
I think it was something like $1,800 per person roundtrip for Chicago to Phuket. Much too pricey for this year. DH and I are hoping to go somewhere in late July but we only want to spend around $3,000 for the whole vacation. Any suggestions? Big Smile
