Need immediate fashion advice

Okay, here's the deal:

I just got invited to a charity fundraiser. It's tonight, from 6:30-9:30. The event will be cocktails & appetizers and an auction. It's hosted by some local NFL players and benefits a families with cancers charity. It will be at the House of Blues downtown. There's no dress code on the invitation, but my friend (who is an intern for the event) said as an "employee" for the night she's wearing black pants, a fancy blouse, and heels.

What the f**k do I wear to something like that? Oh, and also, I have to go buy it sometime before, like, 4:00 p.m. today (so in the next 6 hours). My closet right now consists of jeans, capris, and one pair of dress slacks that are much more business-y than going-out-y. I'm a hermit, I have no going out clothes.

HELP ME PLEASE.

  • Wait right here!  I am going to go virtual shopping for you and PIP some results.  Give me a minute...
  • Do you own a blazer?  You could do that with jeans and a cute tank top/t shirt underneath.

Ditto this. Plus cute pumps. Perfecto.

What stores do you have near you?

  • You could get a black skirt (shorter but not slutty) and match it with a fun tee shirt.  I saw something like this in my people style watch magazine.  The skirt they used was from NY and Company.
  • Oh, Mames, I've got everything. The closest mall has Nordstrom, Macys, New York & Co, Express, Charlotte Russe, Forever 21...and more, I know, but that's my normal hits.

I've also got three Targets, two Khols, and an Old Navy.

I'm worried these would be too casual...no? Am I just not thinking fashion-forward-y enough?

Do you have dark denim? If you do, then pumps, a cute/dressier top and blazer is not casual at all.

  • Very flattering with the v-neck, ruching and cap sleeves.  It won't reveal too much and I like the way she has styled it.  Appropriate for HOB.  But a little $$.  (Banana Republic)

This with your nicest jeans.  A cheaper option.  Still flattering in similar ways.  But gray isn't for everyone (it looks awful on me, for example).  (Banana Republic)

This is from BCBG, one of my absolute favorite stores.  But their mall stores (and therefore website where I've been looking) tend to be a bit expensive, to go for the sale rack or, if you have time to go to an outlet mall (Carlsbad?), their outlets are the best.

I don't know.  I also looked at anthropologie but that style isn't for everyone and I would feel like such a hypocrite because I don't own/wear anything from there.

    Does that help?

  • Lark - thanks fot the tip. I love that dress, and may have to search for it for my friend's upcoming rehearsal dinner. Probably don't have time to go to Carlsbad today, unfortunately. But I do love that place :)

Okay, thanks for the tips. I'm off to hit the mall/stores because, well, I currently can't put together ANY of the suggestions based on what's currently in my closet (seriously, it's sad...). I'll be back later with pictures/needing opinons!

  • Sorry I missed you SBS! Have fun tonight and PIP your outfit manana.
  • Sorry I missed you too! If you get back and read this, don't stress out. I know the venue, and am pretty familiar with the type of event you're describing. I'm 10000% positive you'll be dressed perfectly in dressy jeans, heels, a cute top, and just good ol' fashion hair/makeup/accessories. Throw on a blazer for bonus points. You actually might feel overdressed if you show up in a dress. Better to be overdressed than underdressed though, right?! Have fun tonight!
