CO Nestie traveling to Dayton - recs please : )
Hi!
I'll be in Dayton all of the next week. I've never been and it doesn't sound that exciting. Should we plan an evening in Cincinnati? If so, what would you recommend? TIA!
Re: CO Nestie traveling to Dayton - recs please : )
We are staying at the Hampton Inn (DT, I think). I'm looking for some yummy places to eat especially if it's unique to the region, shopping areas and possibly some nice outdoor areas like a park or a trail that would be good for walking/hiking around to enjoy the weather.
Looks like the local Hamton Inns are north & south town-doesn't matter!
Here's a list of the local parks. Cox Arboretum is south of town and very pretty. Taylorsville park is in Huber Heights (north of town) and has some really nice hiking trails. Second St. Market is a downtown farmers market run by the park district.

The Greene in Kettering/Beavercreek is an outdoor shopping area. The Dayton Mall is south (near Cox) and the Mall at Fairfield Commons is in Beavercreek.

If you like museums, the National Museum of the United States Air Force (Fairborn/Beavercreek area-east) is free, as is the Dayton Art Institute (downtown).
There are lots of good Indian places in the south part of town. Amar is really good. Tank's Bar & Grill is near the University of Dayton. They have great burgers. Esther Price Candies is down the street-they make really good chocolates. THe Oregon District (near downtown) has a few bars & resturants-however I'm not sure you'd want to go if you have your LO with you. The Amber Rose is an old Hungarian place located in the old Eastern European neighborhood. The neighborhood is run down now but you're safe going to the restaurant.
I'd look at Yelp for more ideas. If you do decide to take a drive, Cincy is only an hour away, Columbus is about 75 minutes away.
Hi there, I was born and raised in Dayton and now live in between there and Cincinnati. All of the websites below are directly related to the Dayton area. I'm sure I will think of more but this should get you started. :-)
This is a little outside of Dayton but well worth the drive if you want hiking.

For outdoor shopping and restaurants, this is in Beavercreek (a suburb of Dayton)

Here is another website for most of the city parks and I've been to most of these, they are all different and worth it in their own ways.

This is part of the last one but this is a nice little craft/food market. I believe it's only open Fri-Sun and possibly Thursday.

As for downtown Dayton, we have what's called the Oregon District. It's mostly bars but also has some seriously good food down there, including a little Thai place called Thai 9.

As for Cincinnati, yes it's worth the trip. :-)
If you LO is with you, Cincy has one of the most famous zoo's in the country.

Krohn's Conservatory has a butterfly show going on right now and I've heard it's amazing.

This is a water resort where you can spend the night or just make a day trip.

For hiking, John Bryan State Park and Glenn Helen in Yellow Springs are fantastic. Yellow Springs is worth a trip too if you like unique shops. Good places to eat there are Peaches, the Trail Tavern, Sunrise Cafe (especially breakfast), and the Winds (though its on the pricier side).
If you are interested in planes, space, history/wars, the Air Force Museum is worth a trip. There's an IMAX in there too.
The other posts had great suggestions too.
Hello people the outlet malls! lol Just kidding. They have new outlet malls between Dayton & Cincy. http://www.premiumoutlets.com/outlets/outlet.asp?id=79
It's fairly new to the area & there isn't much else around it except Hustler. lol Everyone else had great recs. If you're looking for good Italian I LOVE Franco's downtown: http://www.francos-italiano.com/ In fact I was just there last night. Cincinnati has the best steakhouses with any of Jeff Ruby's steakhouses.
If you like thai food & sushi there is a great restaurant called Thai 9: http://www.thai9restaurant.com/Main.html
One of my favorite restaurants is Bonefish Grille which is a chain but it's delicious: http://www.bonefishgrill.com/locator/details/dayton-ohio/
At the Greene there is a burger place called EO Burger & they have yummy burgers & frozen custard. Plus the Greene has great shopping but not a ton of stores there.
The Pine Club is an institution. Very old school and delish.
You could go to a Dayton Dragons baseball game if they are in town.
