I hate swimsuits. Well, I didn't until this year. I'm 5'3" and am now a size 8/10. The biggest I've ever been. I'm working on losing weight, but in the mean time I still need a swim suit. I'm a typical hour glass and just have no idea what style to get. I hate my legs the most, but oh well. I'm also a 36 DD, pushing towards whatever the next horrible letter size is.
Tankini? Something with shorts? I always think the shorts make me look squatty.
Re: swimsuit question
I have a tankini, and I am more on the hourglass side as well. I'm at least 10 pounds over the weight I'd like to be for swimsuit wearing, and I don't feel too embarrassed out in my tankini.
The one I have is black, with a halter top. It's kindof like this.

I bought this from Marshall's and it's very flattering, it came with straps:
I rec looking into the suits at Lands' End. They are well-made and last a long time. Best of all, they have suits specifically for DD cups. Most suits just aren't made for those of us with larger chests.
If you don't like your legs, I would get something that has some visual interest at the top closest to your face (either by added color, ruching or other texture, an interesting detail, etc.). I always think (or hope) that will make people not look down as much. People are more likely to look at your boobs and hourglass curves if the suit has something interesting going on there.
I personally do not like halters because they pull on my neck and tend to show too much cleavage. I just need more support.
I don't like the boy shorts at all. I think they make everyone look like they have camel toe and thunder thighs. If you think they make you look squatty, you are probably right. I would go with a swim skirt if you want more coverage - but make sure you get a cute and fun top, or it might look matronly.
You can always get a sarong for when you are out of the water.
