How would you answer this interview question?

"Why do you want to work here?" or "Why do you want to work with kids?" in an interview.  I have an interview at a Children's Hospital for an internship next week...I feel like this question could be in there.  Other than "I like kids" what would you say?  :)  I'm failing to come up with a good response.

Re: How would you answer this interview question?

  • Do some research on the hospital and use what you learn in your answer.  Such as "this hosptial has the #1 NICU in the state and I want to learn from and work with the people who make this hospital what it it. " or something to that effect.

Let them know you know about them, don't just tell them about you.

(disclaimer:  I have not interviewed for a job in over 10 yrs, so my stuff may be all outdated)

  • Talk positively about your experience working with kids and why you're right for the job. Express enthusiasm, passion and explain why you're qualified.
  • I would bring up an experience you had as a child with an adult that truly affected you in a positive way and say that you want to be that person for a child. Maybe mention that it takes a special person to make a child's experience at a hospital a positive one...tell them that you are that person. When a child is scared about being in the hospital, you can help them be brave...etc...it takes a compassionate person to work in that kind of setting...tell them you are a compassionate person and you want to use that compassion to help children feel safe, etc... I am rambling...basically, talk yourself up!! These people want to know that you are willing to do what it takes to make parents and children feel good about choosing their hospital! I have loved my experiences at children's hospital recently. The people are caring, loving, compassionate, personable, etc. They made me feel calm even when I was crying with my baby. They are magical. Be that. Talk about that.

This.  This is not out of date at all and it's really going to help if they know that you looked at their specify hospital enough to know that you want to work there.  If you mention something specific about the hospital in particular, you should impress the interviewers.  They'll know you're serious about the job.

  • I ask interviewees a lot why they want to work here and why they want to do whatever position they've applied for. I'm usually looking to see if they've done their research about the company and that they honestly want to work here and aren't just looking for "some job" to tide them over until they get something better.

As Elisa suggested, do your research about Children's Hospital and really figure out what makes you interested to work there (is it the philosophies, the credentials, what they do, how they do it, etc.).
