Re: Poll: Fave vacation ever

  • My fave vacation ever was Japan.  We went last year at the peak of sakura season.  It was B.E.A.UTIFUL.  The people are so nice, the food was AMAZING.  I just absolutely love Japan.  Not sure if it's because I'm Japanese and feel connected to the culture, or if it's just because it's so awesome.  Period.  I can't wait to go back.

HAHAHAH so basically, i ended up acting as the tour guide for my fam 'cause well. we don't speak cantonese. HAHAHA oh and we would leave the group for meals 'cause even though we were in europe, they would eat at chinese restaurants ?! hehehe

    3) 1994 alaska: stayed for a month as part of a youth exchange program at my church. at first i didn't want to go 'cause i thought i would be bored in the snow. omg so much stuffs to do!  love love love it! =)

  • I have three too:

Greece 2006 .  Ever since I was little I have talked about going to Greece and Egypt.  I went to Greece (plus Italy, Spain, GB, and Ireland) as part of a study abroad program. loved it and really want to go back and spend more time on the islands.  Egypt will have to wait a while, can't imagine going there w/ kids.  So my Egypt fund is going to be spent to build a garage and fence our property - how exotic huh?

DC w/ my mom: Most recently I really enjoyed my last business trip to DC - My mom was going at the same time (for the first time) so I got to show her around.  I know my mom really enjoyed it and it was fun doing something just the 2 of us plus I really like DC, I came pretty close to moving there after law school, but decided I wanted to be close to my family.image

my wedding in Hawaii:  More for the memories since I had already been quite a few times - I feel so blessed to have spent a week hanging out with my family (esp. my grandparents) on Maui and marrying the love of my life  :).

  • Oh, that's such a tough call! I think the highlights would include:

1988: I was 8 and took my second trip to Germany, France & Switzerland. Hung out with friends and family. Played in a ruined castle and found a secret passageway!

1994: My first trip to England - I felt like I was in the most magical place on earth.

2002: My fourth trip to England with my family + cousin + boyfriend, and met up with some friends who were studying in Belgium.

2004 - 2006: Living in Japan and visiting Thailand and all sorts of weekend vacations to various cities

    Kyoto - Ryoanji Temple

    image

Shikoku - in Matsuyama I think

    image

Me at our Ryokan! We went to the oldest onsen in Japan too - the one that Miyazaki based Spirited Away on - right before this. It was so good!

Ahhhh... I love travelling! We're looking at England for Christmas this year and next summer we have the Big Island and Maui again.

  • I LOVED Holland.  We went back in '06 with my parents, brother and SIL and stayed in the town where my Dad grew up.  We actually went by my Dad's childhood home and knocked on the neighbors door... the same neighbor still lives there and remembered my Dad, his siblings and my grandparents.  They invited us inside for some tea, it was surreal.  I hope we can go back someday... I would also love to visit MH's family in Japan.

  • Outside of Hawaii, my favorite trips have been:

    1) Japan 2006- MH spent summers in Japan with family and my first time to Japan was this particular trip. I got to meet his extended family, see where he went to school, and do some sightseeing. I loved Kyoto and the surrounding area the most. Tokyo is fun for a few days but it's not my favorite part of Japan. We just got back from a wedding in Tokyo and we have plans to return in 2011 to visit more rural/off the beaten path areas.

    2) Austria/Germany/Hungary 1998- Went to school for a summer in Vienna. Loved the city and have been itching to go back. But my favorite spots were Salzburg and the Tyrol region & Munich and surrounding Bavaria. Beautiful landscapes, picturesque towns, and awesome beer.

    3) Ireland 1998 - This was our last official trip as a family unit (not counting our wedding). We traced our roots, celebrated Easter in the church where my great great grandparents married, snuck Guinness samples at St. James Gate when our parents weren't looking, and tormented each other while stuck in the smallest car ever as we drove all over the country. The highlights for me were the Book of Kells in Dublin, Galway, kissing the Blarney Stone (silly but fun!), the Cliffs of Moher, and the Lakes of Killarney.

    4) Road Trip 2000 - After graduation, MH and I drove through WA, OR, CA, AZ, NV, UT and ID. 2 weeks together in a car and we survived! Highlights included seeing MH witness the Grand Canyon for the first time, hiking Zion National Park & Bryce Canyon, catching a Husky game in AZ, gambling and partying in Vegas with friends, seeing Temple Square in Salt Lake City and getting chased out of Idaho by white supremacists. For reals!

  • my favorite trip ever was our trip to Fiji....it was our last big vacation before TTC.  beautiful beaches....we got certified and experienced the most amazing diving (great snorkeling too), and dined on really good food too :) plenty of R&R and activity too - i generally don't like a vacation that is too passive.
  • 1. Backpacking (and eating our way) through Europe with DH after getting engaged.  We hit up Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands.  Portugal and Germany were my favorites.  It was quite the whirlwind!

    2. Our honeymoon to Cambodia and Vietnam.  Saw some amazing sites and experienced pure luxury, the kind we could never afford in most other countries.  Plus, we spent a lot of time relaxing and doing nothing, which is rare for us as travelers.

    3. Trips to Kauai.  We just love it there and try to take mini-vacations whenever we can.  The landscape is unbeatable and we always feel so refreshed after slowing-it-down there.

  • i LOVE this poll!  love reading everyone's responses. I have 2 favorites, not counting our wedding itself.

    1. Fiji, for our honeymoon.  Like Jaime, it was super relaxing, but we were really active too.  snorkeled a ton, went diving twice (for the first time since we got certified years ago!), visited an oyster farm, hiked and swam under a waterfall, visited a fijian village, sailed a hobie cat...  and ate a lot of good food (coconut...)

the view from the front porch of our bure:

i'd grab my snorkel gear, walk straight out the front door, plop into the water, and be in snorkel heaven. my favorite photo from snorkeling:

he was swimming around until he saw me, and then quickly tried to hide

    2. Alaska!  I wanted to go to Hawaii (again, as always), MH wanted to go to Alaska.  So we agreed on Alaska last year, Hawaii this year.  It was amazing!  I loved it - so much more than I thought I would.  Can't limit myself to just one or two pips, here are 6 Smile
