So, we don't normally do anything super big for birthdays or anything, but I'm turning 30 next month. DH wanted to do something special - so I left him in complete control, but indicated that I did not want a party. I decided to book some time off work as well.
So, I've been really good about letting him take this one... last night he decided to let me in on his plans, because keeping it a secret was making things difficult and he worried about not getting it right. I reassured him that surprises are nice, but its still a surprise whether he tells me now or later.
Well... DH is taking me to New York City for my birthday! I'm very excited (I've never been). The best part is, I'm not planning it AT ALL. DH just wanted to make sure that I got to do what I wanted to... i.e. do the things that I'd be disappointed if I left NYC without doing.
Ok... so lets turn this is into a poll... what would your Must see/do in NYC be?
For me, I needed to see Macy's. I don't need to go to a Broadway show, not my thing. Indicated that I'd like to see a baseball game. Oh and museums.
Re: AW: my upcoming birthday surprise...
Wow, awesome!
My must see list includes Central Park, FAO Schwartz, and a walk down 5th Avenue.
Oh that's awesome! I love NYC. My university grad present was a week long trip there (courtesy of my dad's airmiles).
If you're interested in doing "touristy" stuff, look into getting a City Pass. It gets you discounted admission to the major sights.
We're big theatre lovers and saw 3 shows in the week we were there, so you not wanting to go makes me sad.
But definitely take a walk around the Boardway/42nd area. I mean, it's Times Square, so you can't really miss it.
I'd also suggest getting a Metro pass and use the subway to get around. It's super easy to figure out, and waaaay easier than a car.
For baseball, the timing worked for us to see a Mets game (the Jays were in town to play the Yanks just after we left, or maybe it was just before....) and we took the subway there and back, so that was easy.
If you like to shop, or even if you don't really, China town is the place to get knock-off purses. Some of them are really good quality. And make sure you bargain with them too.
If you want to do the Empire State building, I suggest getting up early and getting in line before the building opens. We did that and got up to the top almost immediately (only had to wait as long as it took to get people up the elevators).
We'll just not tell H about this little fact, m'kay?
What a great surprise!
If I were going to New York City I would definitely want to go walking through Central Park. I've also always wanted to go the Museum of Natural History. Times Square, Fifth avenue, and the Statue of Liberty would also be on my list of must sees.
Have a great time
SO ENVIOUS! DH and I went there for our 1st anniversary and I fell in LOVE with the city. It was awesome!?
We loved just walking around and exploring. Central park was a great place to chill and we rented a row boat for an afternoon; it was so lovely. The Museums, of course, are great. We both loved the Metropolitan Museum of Art, but plan for a WHOLE day there. We spent 5 hours on the main floor, got too exhausted to continue, and went back to finish it the next day. It's HUGE. The Museum of Modern Art was also great.
We did do the Empire State Building (early in the morning to avoid the crowds) and that was pretty neat. Touristy, but cool.
And we saw Lion King on Broadway. I know ?you said it's not your thing, but I have no doubt you'd enjoy a show. Lion King left me speechless and was worth the whole trip to me, so I'd recommend it.?
We didn't do the Statue of Liberty, Ground Zero, or Wall St/Financial district. We did do the Museum of Natural History, but didn't really enjoy it (not without kids, anyway). ??
Have an awesome time!?
