Alarm System

Rec your home alarm system.  Why do you like them or not?  If you don't mind sharing how much you pay monthly, that would be awesome too!  You can also email me if you don't want to post on here.

Re: Alarm System

  • We have ADT and I think we pay about $35 a month becuase we don't have a land line.

We use Time Warner as our home phone so they had something that could use VoIP and was a few extra dollars a month. I don't have any complaints against them and I've found the few times I've had to call their customer service it's been friendly. We do have them direct bill to our credit card.

  • I'm not a big fan of Brinks (now Broadview).  The alarm itself is fine, but we've had a couple of really bad service experiences.  The installer missed a window and was really rude when I pointed it out, then at 3am the morning after installation, our alarms went off and scared the hell out of us (we'd had the alarm put in because we had an attempted break in the day before).  The guy had incorrectly installed a sensor, and Brinks took forever to call to check on us, then tried to tell me nobody could fix it for 48 hours.  It took me chewing out a manager to get someone out the next day.  THEN it went off when we were out of town (probably the cats jiggling a door) and they handled it awfully that time as well.

I'd go with ADT, our parents and neighbors who use them like them a lot.  I'd love to have their remote control feature to turn the alarm on from outside!

That's who the officer who responded to our break-in recommended.  The guy took awhile to return our call, which is why we ended up with Brinks, but I think if I did it over I'd go with Sloan.

That sucks!  I always get a call that same day unless they answer.  Was it Bob?

Yep, they are fantastic!  I had my system installed about a year ago, and they did a really good job of explaining to me how it worked, etc.

Also, re: needing a land line phone:  they don't require it, you can use another method like a pp mentioned.  However, I figure out that a land line for me is about $18 (incl. tax)/month, so that was still cheaper than the other options.  I don't even have a land line phone plugged in at my house, the alarm co. has instructions to call my cell if needed.

    HTH!
