*Parents*

I know you're a few years off from this, but I had an upsetting talk with a student today. She and some friends decided to go on chatroulette (link here if you don't know what that is), got randomly connected to an old guy wearing a cat mask who was holding a bird in his hand. He told my student that if she didn't show him her tits, he'd kill the bird. Then he picked up a knife. My student refused, and he then killed the bird in front of her.

Suffice to say, she's pretty traumatized.

I cannot stress this enough: do NOT let your child have a computer in their bedroom. You can't watch them 24/7, I know, but they'll think twice about what they do if it's in a public space.

Re: *Parents*

  • I'm traumatized just reading this.  Horrible.

My children won't have computers/tvs/video games etc in their rooms, I cringe just thinking about what will be on the market when Jack is older.  Maybe we will move off grid up in the mountains.  Haha, kidding - extreme sheltering isn't good.

  • OMG!! I didn't even know such website exists.

I completely agree! DH and I already talked about this and we both agreed that there will be NO computer in the kids rooms. We'll put the computer in the living room where we can see what they are doing.

I agree with this completely. I never even heard of chatroulette until I opened this post and click on your wikipedia link to read about it, but it just goes to show how dangerous the internet can be. I'm sorry your student went through that =( Thanks for sharing!

  • I saw this on the news not too long ago (about the website).  I can't believe this exists!

  • wow i think i too am traumatized just by reading this too.  thanks for the warning
  • That's the thing about the awkward teenage years. Unless you really keep on the pulse of all things teen, it's hard to know what kind of trouble they can get into.
  • Ugh.  How disgusting.  Is there any way of reporting such people?

Exactly this.  And we're not going to allow a cell phone before high school...at least not one that they can call/text whomever they wish.  I could see one of those kiddie ones (where the calls are restricted to numbers the parents designate) but not a full-fledged one earlier than that.

  • Wow!! I can't believe your student had to go through that... very disturbing.
  • That is horrible. What age is your student? How do you explain that some people are mentally ill? Tell her it would have been worse if she did what he said and then killed the bird. Freak.

This for us, too. And DH is plotting to put all kinds of limits on their access as well (hooray for IT guys lol!).

me either!  I am sad too for your student (as a former teacher, I can only imagine how difficult it was to hear that!).

  • That is terrible!  I wonder if her parents know...
