MH and I saw an extended version of the trailer (about 30 min) of split scenes from the movie. It was very good, although it made our heart hurt to visualize, although we knew, what the Hawaiian people went through during the overthrow. It also made us hurt for the Queen, Princess, and the royal family as it must have been agonizing trying to fight for your people when you are seemingly the underdog. We had a lot of mixed emotions.
We are going to see the movie tomorrow in full with our family.
Re: New movie coming out about our Princess
I really do think that the majority do. We attend a lot of Native Hawaiian events. Even in the process of obtaining the Homestead, we have been exposed to a lot of history and information about the reason why the Homestead is available to Native Hawaiians in the first place.
Last year, we got to go into the Iolani Palace again for free and did the full tour. The tour guides share the story of the monarchy and the overthrow on the tour. It's all based on historical records.
Thanks, I will have to check it out.
We read a few cases re: Hawaiian Natives in law school (since my focus is Native American law it was in some of my texts) although today's legal ramifications for Hawaiian and Alaskan Natives are so different than that of mainland Natives that it doesn't really come up now that I'm practicing but is something I'm still very interested in.

Thanks for posting! I hadn't heard of the movie before & know little about the Hawaiian history. New Orleans isn't on the list either, but hopefully I will be able to catch it on On Demand or HBO at some point.
After you see it, let us know what you think!
