Hello,
My husband and I are planning to move from NJ to NC within the year and would love any "insider" information as to where might be best for us. I am 27 and my husband is 32. We are looking to have children in two-three years and are looking for an area that has good school systems for our future children and for myself to teach in. My husband is in accounting and would be looking for an accounting job. Basically, we are looking for a nice, safe, suburban area. We are unfortunately aware that the job market is terrible everywhere, but of course ideally we're looking for an area we could find jobs in. We are also looking for a somewhat Jewish population so we could join a temple.
Right now our top contenders are Cary and Charlotte...any advice on those two area? Or other areas?
Your advice couldn't be more appreciate!!!

Re: Looking to move to NC....much needed help from North Carolinas
I live in the Triangle (Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill) which is where Cary is. Cary is in Wake county which currently has a hiring freeze for teachers. Obviously it won't last forever, but it is hard to get on in Wake county in general. I got on in Durham county after 11 months of trying for a teaching job, and I'm being cut for next year. Durham probably will be doing zero outside hiring for the next 6 months at least. Teaching in this area is a hard job to get started in. The school systems are generally pretty good around here, but different schools have different reputations. You can move to one place and have your kids going to one school this year, and a totally different school next year. If you don't have kids yet, I wouldn't be too worried about that.
One of my BFF's is Jewish and lives in Raleigh...I know there is a significant number of Jewish people in the area, they even have a Jewish preschool.
We live in North Raleigh & while we're only about 7 miles from downtown, it feels very suburban to me. Nice neighborhoods, good schools and close to everything.
There are 2 big temples in N. Raleigh, Beth Or for Reform and Beth Meyer for Conservative. There's also an Orthodox temple, but I can't remember the name. The JCC is also in N. Raleigh. In Cary there is an Orthodox temple and a Reform. Check out these sites for more info:

Hope that helps & good luck w/ the move!
Hi- We moved here from Baltimore and are Jewish. We belong to Beth Meyer and have children in their pre-school. I'm also on the pre-school board and very active in the synagogue. If you would like to know more I'd love to answer any questions I can. We only moved here 1.5 yrs ago and it was the best decision we ever made. My email is bethgerstner@gmail.com
Hope I'm able to help answer questions for you

I don't know anything about Charlotte, but Cary has a huge Jewish population (huge is relative here--compared to where we came from, it's miniscule, but it's pretty tightly knit once you get into a shul). It also has an awesome school system, and a great quality of life. Greenways, lots of green space, great neighborhoods, not super congested, and not as highly hit by the recession as other parts of the country. (It's still tough to find a job though!).
We moved to metro Raleigh (Morrisville) just over a year ago and couldn't be happier with our choice. Coming from Atlanta, it's a great change of pace, and puts you close to several smaller cities without being in the city.
We'll always remember our angel baby: BFP 9/24/10, M/C 10/23/10 8w4d
CLT doesn't have a huge Jewish population, but there are a couple temples and a JCC.
Whatever you do though, find a job before moving. The job market here is just flat out not good.
